Tough Question.

I agree with many of the posters who said, "don't" or "walk away". I have had many opportunities to fight, however, I have been successful in find a peaceful resolution in all but two cases...

The reason this question is so tough is because you really never know what their tolerence is to a beating... Boxers for example are quite used to a pounding... Whereas, people like myself, aren't... Through the years, through competitions and real situtions (both when I've had to fight or while I was trying to find a successful peaceful resolution) I've learned three important rules

1) Master distance: Remember, if they're close enough to strike you, then you need to strike them first... Or move slightly out of their striking distance and you don't need to worry about being hit... ALWAYS CONTROL THE DISTANCE, and remember distance isn't forwards and backwards, it's also side to side, and around them...

2) Technique overcomes Strength: Hitting someone square in the nose is far more effective that a jackhammering blow to a forehead (never hit a forehead unless you're using a hammer - and I mean a hammer literally...)

3) Speed overcomes Technique: It's always nice to know that should you miss your first blow to their nose you're fast enough to follow it up with another shot at it... Practicing in combos helps your body remember to deliver attacks that way...

And there is one more lesson I've learned, except, since I don't really fit the last one I've never been able to rely on it...

4) Strength overcomes Speed: What does that mean? and I'm sure a lot of people will want to disagree... Except, if you've ever fought with an NFL Offensive Lineman you'll learn pretty quick these guys can take a serious beating really fast and shake it off equally fast... And for the record, there is nothing scarier than a really angry NFL offensive lineman... Rule #1 & #2 saved me... (and the bar bouncer)

it's not all punches but try playing around with some of the techniques.

my tips for a fist fight when you don't have time to train...
move naturally-don't be tense trying to get some kind of silly foot work going that you haven't had the time to practice
if you're blocking, you better also be attacking-when you see a punch coming as you are blocking or right after blocking(before that attack hand goes back) that punch make sure you throw a counter attack.
only think about where the attack might come from and where the opponent is open
once you hit the opponent and they are retreating in order to regroup, keep charging forward and punch him with all you got.

those are just quick pointers

rule no1.there are no rules.if you've let the situation get out of hand you do what you have to do no matter what it takes.if i was attacked by a gang of blokes and i was on the ground and the only way i was going to win or even improve my position and the only thing i could do was bite someones dick off i wouldn't even think twice.rip, tear break whatever you have to do theres a lot better options than fists thats for sure.but if some old drunk takes a swing at you well obviously you dont go to that extent, like i said you do what you have to do at the time.

sure, avoid it, but if you cant, then forget that crap about not being there.
first law: dont be there (sadly this is where most of the answers so far have ended, as if it works 100%) so to answer your Q with some decency of reality...
2nd law: fight and dont stop till its over.

use fists, kicks, chops, head butts, elbows and knees where ever the opportunity presents itself. Aim for knees, shins, stomach, sternum, ribcage, point of jaw, temples eyes, nose, neck, throat.

if you want to win at anything, dont limit yourself to the rules. if they say fist fight its because thats what they are good (or more confident) at. agree, then fire away with anything you can. if you are not the @sshole in the fight, and it wasnt your intention, then waste them. they are not your friend. go crazy.

Getting hit hard on the point of the chin triggers a nerve reflex that can cause your opponent to black out, or at least become disoriented and wobbly.
Use short jabs around the area of the eyes, causing the defender's hands to raise high, then deliver an uppercut to the chin, using your dominate hand.
At this point many opponents will recognize that you are superior, so remain in your fighting stance and let the opponent have a chance to quit fighting.
However, if you have reason to believe that the opponent will continue the battle, once you have him staggered just keep hammering until he submits.

First realize there are no rules in a fist fight. Anything goes. Second aim for anything that looks like it would hurt.

Your best bet though is not to put yourself in situations where you have to fight. A wiseman once said "caution is the better part of valor".

With a gun!

Barring that, don't put yourself into a situation that you would have to win a fist fight.

An old boxer once said, "The firstest with the mostest is the bestest," and that's pretty much it. It's not all about who can deliver the most damage though, it's often the person who can TAKE the most without going down. In this manner of speaking, you also need to remember that you should NOT stand toe to toe with a guy and just brawl it out. You need to move, step in a small circle with your back foot (circle steps get you out of a direct line of fire from your opponent's attacks just by moving your back foot while keeping your front foot still...try it) and move forward and backward. When attacking, move in fast, make your moves and move away quickly. When defending, move away from attacks and circle to give yourself a better line of countering.
Aside from that, it's all about training in proper technique and practice.
Hope this helps...

In sport you must beat the other guy.

In a "street" situation, you are able to walk away without serious injuries to yourself.

HOW to do that is a much longer answer requiring you to study some fighting art.

Start with a straight punch or a push kick.
Knees and elbows works best in a real fight.
