CANDY CANE COOKIES
1/2 c. butter, softened
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. red food color
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix thoroughly butter, shortening, confectioners' sugar, egg and flavorings. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half. Shape 1 teaspoon dough from each half into 4 inch rope. For smooth, even ropes, roll them back and forth on lightly floured board. Place ropes side by side; press together lightly and twist. Complete cookies one at a time. Place on ungreased baking sheet; curve top of cookie down to form handle of cane. Bake about 9 minutes or until set and light brown. If you wish, mix 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy and 1/2 cup sugar. Immediately sprinkle cookies with mixture; remove from baking sheet. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.

1 1/2 c. Quaker oats
Beat butter and vanilla until creamy. Add sugar gradually; beat until fluffy. Add water. Sift flour and salt together. Add to creamed mixture; mix well. Stir in oats until well blended. Dough will be quite stiff. Make into candy cane shapes; place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in slow oven (325 degrees) for 20-25 minutes; cool. Frost canes with white frosting. Color some of the white frosting with red food coloring and make red stripes across the canes. Makes 36 candy cane cookies.

Sift together in large bowl:
3 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
Add:
1/2 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla or nutmeg
Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes.
Add:
1/2 cup thick sour cream
sifted flour mixture
Preheat oven to 375-400F degrees.
Beat at low speed until well blended (1 1/2 minutes). Roll out lightly on floured board to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut and sprinkle with sugar.
Put on prepared cookie sheet. Dot a raisin in the middle and bake about 12 minutes at 375-400 degrees.

100-YEAR-OLD OATMEAL COOKIES
2 eggs
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 1/2 c. white flour
1 c. oatmeal
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. nuts and(or) 1 c. raisins (opt.)
Mix together the first 4 ingredients. Mix together the flour, oatmeal, soda and cream of tartar. Combine both with vanilla until well blended. Add nuts or raisins, if desired. Roll in balls and place on cookie sheets. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees.
Makes 5 dozen.
