Polish Pure Spirit 79.9% alcohol by volume is 140 proof.

I had the worst ever hangover of my life after drinking this stuff.

But it is readily available and surprisingly cheap.

It is also virtually tasteless so is a cheap way to give a punch bowl an almighty kick

90 proof is not as much as you might think. 100 proof is 50% pure alcohol.

Distilled liquor such as whiskey and bourbon reach in the 90 proof range because of the distilling. Wine and beer get their alcohol from fermentation which produces much less alcohol.

You will find 90 proof in shops that sell distilled alcohol, but not called proof. For example, if you happen to be in Bawtry, Doncaster (UK) you can stop by Mainly Malts and see their selection of whiskeys from around the world. There you will note that the label is percentage by volume, as this is a measurement used to describe alcohol. Using the word "proof" can lead to confusion, as the Brits and the Yanks have different measurements as to what 90 proof is.

U.K. 90 proof-spirit = 51.354% vol. distilled ethyl alcohol + 48.646% vol. water @ 51 F
U.S. 90 proof-spirit = 45.000% vol. distilled ethyl alcohol + 55.000% vol. water @ 60 F

Alcohol percentage by volume gives an accurate description of what you are getting in any bottle, in any country. At Mainly Malts, you can find 40%vol in the American import Jim Beam or go as high as 61.9%vol with the offering from Scotland, Glen Scotia. You can check Mainly Malts web site for %vol comparisons of different brands as they also sell online and have a catalogue with photographs: www.whisky-malts-shop.com/

Now I have a feeling you wanted to know if 90% drinking alcohol is available, well now I do not think so because at that strength it can easily kill you. Alcohol is actually a poison that will kill if you have too much at once. In the US, the closest you can get to 100% alcohol is 75.5%vol and that stuff has one heck of a bite. Not your good sipping liquor by a long shot.

ADDED: My apologies. In some parts of the US, Everclear brand, a pure grain alcohol, is available at the strength of 195%vol, as well as 75.5%vol. It is used to make alcoholic punch and has the warning of "Don't drink it straight!" Anyone who does, might very well die. Everclear is not a bourbon, as someone mentioned, but just pure distilled alcohol.

Everclear is 190 proof (95% alcohol) or 151 proof (75.5% alcohol). Its not readily available, but you can find it if you look a little bit.

Bacardi sells a rum that is 151 proof (aptly titled Bacardi 151) and is available at most specialty liquor stores (like Beverages and More) and some grocery stores. I warn you though, it tastes like hairspray

yes there is 90 proof alcohol available. the proof just lets you know the actual percentage that is in the alcohol. ex. 100 proof = 50% of alcohol in the beverage
(you can buy hot damn 100 proof at many liquor stores in the USA)

The strongest alcoholic drink in the world (that is drinkable) is Polish Vodka. It's 95% proof but isn't available in this country. The best you could do here is Absinth which is about 50%ish.

90 proof is essentially 45% alcohol content. Most "hard" liquor is 80-86 proof, and I know Old Grand-Dad has a 100-proof bourbon.

Is there a reason you need 90% exactly?

Yes, there is - Everclear bourbon, for example is 190 degrees proof (95% alcohol). A milder 151 degrees proof (75% alcohol) is also available.

However, it is illegal to sell a sprit of that strength in the U.K.

i think you mean percent because lots of alcohols have 90 proof and can reach up to 200 proof. if you the live in the UK then try absinthe or moonshine if not then there's not a lot stuff that you can buy in America unless it's illegally

My favorite barnd of bourbon - Ezra Brooks - is 90 Proof. I'm pretty sure Evan Williams is too (I'm not such a fan of this brand though).

Everclear is 190 proof, and the closest thing you can get to store-bought moonshine corn liquor. It is illegal in some states, so if you're in one of those states you'll have to do some travelling to get it. You're most likely to find it in a larger "warehouse" style liquor store. You probably shouldn't drink it straight, it really isn't all that good that way. Most people I know who get it use it for their own homemade recipes for other kinds of alcohol... i.e., homemade Kahlua.

In case you are industrious enough to want to try to make your own, there is a handy reference book in existence:
"The Alaskan Bootlegger's Bible" by Leon W. Kania
