depends on why they are crying

All depends on the age. If it's a baby, crying is the only way it can express it's displeasure over something. So, you have to eliminate things one by one until you find the problem...dirty diaper, hungry, needs burping, too hot, too cold, social time..e.t.c.
Older kids can cry and fuss for a long time to get their way about things. My grandson cried for two hours striaight after being put to bed. I was called to come over to see if I could do anything. I gave him a sippy cup of milk, his blanket, turned on a cartoon show and 20 min. later he was sound asleep. YMMV

Depends on the reson, My dd can wail for hours when she doesnt get her way, but if shes upset a hug and a little talk about why shes upset get her calmed back down in no time. As for babies my son did that once when he was 4 months old, nothing worked, the best thing I did was put him in his crib and walk away to calm down, when I came back he was asleep!

I read in a magazine they can cry for like 4 hours a day and it's considered normal >.< (depending on their age)

why would u want to know how long a kid can cry for? or even for how long? look at urself how long can u cry for only with children they are small tears

My daughter cried from 6:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. once when she was about four weeks old. I still have no idea why. She wouldn't nurse either.
