Let me first start by saying that if you do this, you will not only offend all Americans, but all Americans who served as soldiers, sailors, airmen and officers. This is not something that should ever be fooled around with. In years passed, people in this country didn't have a choice to fight, they were drafted, and they earned their honors with respect. Just like today, those who did enlist, even though it was their choice they still worked for their medals and earned them.
By imitating yourself as a former Ranger or Navy SEAL, is a terrible way to make yourself appears more interesting if you didn't really earn it. I'm actually rather disgusted that you would consider this at all. Out of my entire family, nearly half served in the US Armed Forces in some way. Many being wounded. Through that, they earned their medals with respect, they didn't have to pretend. If you want your life to seem more interesting, go and do what you really want to do. Become a firefighter or a paramedica or something that has extreme excitement.
If another veteran ever discovered this about you, they would probably not only be quite offended, but, they would probably beat you up over it too. Besides, there's really no way you could ever fake this because there are so many vets walking around not just from previous conflicts, but today as well who know many, if not all of their friends from their units. By trying to pass this off to someone who knows is like trying to take candy from a baby, it's just not going to work. Plus, trying to get your story straight all the time, (what field army you were with, which goes by odd numbered numerals, what division, what brigade you were in, what battalion, what company, and so on). Many military units go by varying names like Charlie Company or Fox Company, as well as 10th Company and so on.
Not to mention, by doing this on public records or through trying to get a job or registering for something, like grants or finanical aid is completely illegal. If you don't know the system, which is why you are asking probably, then you wouldn't be able to do it anyway most likely. If you don't know the ranks, the units, the military system, and a vet asks you what was your company or your battalion, chances are you won't know.
I wouldn't for your sake ever try and impersonate a veteran out of just plain disrespect to those who served and died and those who survived.

First have a leg amputated. This will give you that "authentic" look you're going for. Then gouge one of your eyes out. Finally, have one of your friends use you for target practice, you want to be able to show off the wounds you received. What are you? A complete idiot. To try and take advantage of being a war hero when you are not is one of the lowest things I can imagine. I hope you try it and the person is really a war vet. They can then proceed to give you a little lesson out back of the bar you're bragging in. What a loser... Get a life.

Just continue on and you'll soon see that anyone who has been in the military will see what a despicable phony you are. If you want to talk the talk, then walk the walk. Otherwise, you're just a pathetic loser.

Good Question.
There is a group of veterans who spend their extra time in exposing these phonies.
Here's the ironic thing about it:
Most of the Phony War Heroes that have been exposed were actually Draft-Dodgers during Viet Nam.
(Over the past several years articles about this matter have been in the VFW & American Legion Magazines.)
Thank you for your question!

It is a good question to ask a recruiter just tell them you want to be a hero and then sign the paper he gives you so you wont be prosecuted.

That would be very dangerous for you if you started telling stories around real soldiers. I'm the real McCoy, and I'd be able to spot your B.S. a mile away. Please do not disrespect those who have sacrificed for your country.

You can pretend that you died in Iraq. You can get all free stuff, and all sorts of medals you can think of. You will get a free coffin and a military burial with full honors as a bonus. Your friends can even watch Bush on CNN and Fox speaking in praises for your heroism....

first of all, its kind of illegal to pretend that you are a war hero. Second of all, you need to work to get the things in life that you want. That's why they have jobs.
