A good well rounded style would be freestyle Karate. You will learn stand up,ground, grappling and weapons. What a lot of people don't understand is that freestyle Karate is about practical street defence not who can kick the highest or punch a pad the hardest. It's definitely not a sport martial art like TKD or BJJ.The motto of my style is the best of everything in progression.Basically that means we don't care where the technique comes from we improve it and integrate it into our style while still maintaining tradition as do most freestyle Karate's. The hardest thing is finding a good experienced instructor.I would recommend Bushi Kai or Zen Do Kai, but if your not in Australia or New Zealand you may have some difficulty finding some one who teaches these styles. These styles also usually have separate classes available to everyone in Muay Thai and BJJ/Submission/Shoot wrestling. If you can't find one of these i would suggest Kempo or Enshin or another freestyle Karate.

wow, i can't believe i'm going to say this, but go to a gym/fitness/boxing, kickboxing, muay tie place. i'm a traditional martial arts guy, so i don't do this often. But i think you could use a bit of work out, correct diet plan, and martial art.
if that seems too much, try to eat foods that you know all the ingredients of and no red meat,(if you can't read the ingredient then it's a definate no) do simple push up, sit up, jumping jacks, a bit of running/jogging/walking, and those other simple workouts, and after a bit of that attend martial art somewhere. you could just start out with martial art, but i've seen so many people who has the form down but not have any power behind their technique. (not that you need muscle to put power behind a technique{and that's another story on how to do that} but muscle and endurance helps a lot)
ps. being in better shape helps, but that well not stop people from picking on you. it's about your attitude and how you carry yourself that well stop it.

Good idea, to look to martial arts. (you can't buy yourself a handgun and concealed weapon permit?)
I'm a sophomore and I'm taking gojo ryu karate through book lessons. I got the stances down, like shiko-daschi, and now I'm learning the hand strikes. The main thing is, with any martial art, you need to practice practice practice. My dad's a purple belt in kung fu, and he's said that all the time.
I'd suggest looking up a YMCA or a Full Circle Karate in your phonebook, and start with a few martial arts programs so you can get a feel of what it's like.

Look, I reccomend that you start with something like Tai Chi to help you build physical strength and endurance for a bit. It is extremely low impact and will initiate muscle-memory motions for you. Then, after you physically train your body to work out, you can move on to a more difficult art that will perhaps help you with the self-confidence issues you have. Once your body is capable of working in a classroom setting, I recommend something like VALE TUDO, or Shootfighting, Maybe Gracie Jiu Jitsu, because the techniques in these arts are more directed to actual fighting defense than to religious lessons.
Hope this helps.

Tai Chi Chuan (any family) is great for people with health or physical problems and if you are willing to study the form is really brutal. it also has a lot of great philosophy, history, and thought behind it. however martial arts and especially Tai Chi are not for fighting just protecting so if you want to learn martial arts for fighting then your in it for the wrong reason.

anyone can learn martial arts. just go to a martial arts gym. you should never let anyone pick on you. you should always stand up for yourself no matter how big the other person is. bullies only like to pick on people that are not going to defend themselves. i dont condone fighting but sometimes you have to.

Of course you can learn and accomplish everything you set out to do. You must have determination, without that you will be wasting your time and money.
Good luck!
