DO NOT CASH THAT CHECK! You are correct, this is a money laundering scheme. And it is more than likely from Canada. My mother works in the Lost Prevention dept of a bank and for the last six months or so she's dealt with people who fell for this scheme. What happens is you cash the check using your checking account, forward the 10% to the "person", the cancelled check goes to the schemer with your bank account and routing number stamped on it. Once they have your banking info, they wipe your account clean. They usually target young people in their 20's or senior citizens.
Even though the US banks know it's a scheme, they've yet to figure out how to get the money back from the people in Canada. Which means you become responsible for paying all of that money back to your bank. Most bank will set up a repayment plan, but this is all they can offer you. My mom hates dealing with this because she feels so bad for the customer.

This is both a money laundering scheme, and a money STEALING scheme. Your money, that is. If you deposit that check, it will take 3 or 4 weeks to bounce. Meanwhile you will have sent 90% of it on to someone unknown to you -- probably by Western Union, right? When it bounces, you'll be out the entire amount of the check with your bank; you'll have to make it up out of your OWN funds.
NO legit business uses a Yahoo e-mail address. NO business has a legit reason to send you a check for you to relay cash on to someone else.
Turn it over to the police, along with any copies of any correspondence you have from this person. If they've called you on the phone, give them copies of your phone records as well so that they can try to trace the individual.
Some of these scams are operated by terror organizations. When that check bounces, the FBI and Homeland Security may become involved if there is any suspected terror link. That will put YOU under the spotlight as a terror suspect. So you really want that??

DON'T DO IT!! My family was on really hard times when monsterjob sent me a job offer. It was the same situation. I checked into it, signed a "contract", got the checks, forwarded them thru Western Union minus 10%, and got nailed from the bank a couple of weeks later.
I went to the police, the banks & everyone I could think of, but still was responsible for paying it all back. Many banks are aware of this scam & are trying to resolve this problem, but too many people are already screwed. Go to the police now & show them all correspondence. Your family's financial future depends on it....& I would LOVE to see some of these assh&^$% get busted!!

Why would anyone send a check to someone they don't know, ask them to cash it and forward 90% of it, if it wasn't a scam? This isn't even close. I've heard it happen on eBay...someone bought an item, and asked them to subtract the cost of the item from the cashiers check and forward the rest. Guess what? They got the item and the money! And the person was out of both!

You should ask yourself first why it was sent to you. Myself I
would turn it over to the FBI or homeland security. If it's legal
they will give it back to you. And who knows you may have done
your part to prevent another 9/11.

IT'S A SCAM.
TAKE THE CHECK TO YOUR BANK. THEY WILL TELL YOU WHETHER IT IS REAL OR NOT. MOST LIKELY, THEY WILL EITHER CONTACT THE ISSUING BANK TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE CHECK IS FORGED OR TELL YOU TO DEPOSIT IT AND WAIT FOR THE FUNDS TO CLEAR COMPLETELY BEFORE YOU SEND ANY MONEY BACK.
WHAT CAN'T HE JUST CASH THE CHECK HIMSELF???
IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS!
