My Son's Black Labrador (1 Yr old) is not only gun shy but extremely timid about everything. I have tried hunting her next to my Lab, but she still will cower and run when a gun is fired. She is being raised with a small yorkie that is very timid also. Any suggestions? Proffessional trainer , Perhaps?

Probably because if you are shooting animals, shes afraid she'll be next.

I would think if the Yorkie is very timid as well, the household should be looked at. Maybe your son or someone else in the house is (not purposefully) scaring them by yelling or something else like that?
A pro trainer could give you and him ways to bolster her self confidence, I would talk to your son first and find out if there is something going on with how the lab is disciplined that is making her timid. A trainer won't be able to fix it if that is the case until things change.

Im going to say your Lab probably thinks she IS a teeny tiny little Yorkie! I grew up with a yorkie and a Great Dane and that Dane just couldnt understand WHY in the car she couldnt be on your lap! Hmmmmm lol! Dogs ears are very very sensitive and it may just hurt her ears! Labs are wonderful gentle and very good family dogs! They just are not the greatest at agreesiveness at all! Turn her into a lover puppy not a hunter!

just because the breed is used for hunting, does not mean that every dog in that breed will be a hunter. a dog is either gun shy or not, and if it is gun shy, it will never be a hunter.

as far as being timid or easily frightened, the Yorkie itself has little to do with this. that is like saying, "my son was raised with his mother, and now is a female." if you are truly concerned about the dogs behavior, discuss this with its vet.

My father bred Labs for hunting and every now and then he got one that just couldn't adjust to the gun. I don't hunt my dogs but, he use to take them out in a crate while young pups of 8 to 10 weeks of age while target or dove hunting. He said it was preparing them. I am guessing here but did you start this dog late? There are a few here that should know. I am not one of them.

We had a Golden and she was gun shy at a year old. We took her to the trap range every week and sat there with her to get her used to the sound. That helped a TON. And he just kept taking her to the field with him. He made it like a game. She became an AMAIZING hunting dog. All you need is patience and give her reassurance and she'll be fine.

Sorry, but what you have there is a smart lab. She's afraid of guns, as any intelligent being would be. My suggestions? Stop scaring the crap out of that poor animal and let her gain confidence without some other poor animal being killed in front of her.

any animal will be gun shy. you must teach them it is ok. I breed labs, and teach them to hunt duck. They are great hunters, but others are more sensative then some. Give him time. he will learn to get over it. Some labs don't like water either.

most trainers would break them from being gun shy by doing this. put her food dish down, when she starts eating fire a round off. if she moves away, take the food dish and try again later. her hunger will over-ride her fear of gunshots.

She knows what guns do and is rightly afraid of them.
Also many dogs are afraid of loud noises. They do not get over it. Can't you just enjoy her for a pet without subjecting her to something she fears so much?
