Peter Freeman 'Travelling Light' is a gateway beacon sculpture for Weston super Mare and the SW of the UK. Sited at Junction 21 on the M5 motorway, 'Travelling Light' welcomes the traveller with a 13metre column of sparkling LED light.

There are programmed colour changes for each day of the week, with special light shows for individual calendar dates. During the week the sculpture gently scrolls through the primary colours with an added digital machine-gun sparkle. It throws up a river of pink hearts for Valentines Day and simulated light fireworks for New Year. Other dates include electric snow for Christmas, cosmic colour patterns for summer and winter solstices, flames on bonfire night and space-invaders on Halloween.
Monday to Friday the sculpture scrolls through sparkling colours.
Light and the changing seasons are a very important element of living in the SW. The M5 motorway is the main route to and from the SW and Cornwall where I live. I drive up and down this part of the road all the time. For 'Travelling Light' I wanted to create a visual spectacle that would express an exuberance of colour, reflect the passage of time and lighten the journey of everyone heading into the SW. This part of the M5 is also a main commuter route into Bristol and I wanted to surprise and amuse drivers who use this stretch of road on their way to work.

'Travelling Light' uses 2000 digital LED light pixels, controlled via a CPU, Ethernet and an astronomical clock. The sculpture is a 13metre high mirror stainless steel structure. It is sited on a 15metre manmade mound giving a total height of 28metres and making it visible from miles around.

The sculpture was commissioned by Locking Castle Ltd and completed at the end of December 2004.
