I personally think it is impossible to stop them from melting. Noone is going to change their habits until it is to late. I think that this is all a huge cycle in which the Earth warms, then cools, then warms, then cools, etc. It has a way of healing itself but in order to do that, unfortunately we will all die. Stay positive, =)

In order for all the glaciers on planet earth to melt simultaneously the earth's tilt would have to move about 23 degrees clockwise so that both poles were equidistant from the sun at all times. Thus eliminating all of earth's seasons. The weather would have to change to something substantially more like a permanent summer-- no snow could fall anywhere.
Yes, there have been some recent accelerated movements of some of the earth's glaciers reported. Yes carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is on the increase. However, reports of these are probably the result of recently improved technologies. Can you think of such any such reports made before 100 years ago?
If such an event were to happen I'm sure there would be enough land above the risen sea level for us all.

What do you mean "if"?
It's already happening at an alarming rate. The least problem is that sea level will rise. The worst problem is that ocean currents will change--in fact they already are beginning to make mensurable changes.
No matter what the nay-sayers" on here say, we are facing a very serious problem. There are several "tipping points" which when reached, will very quickly put us in danger. This fast a climate change has happened before and practically all life died out.
All you have to do is read up on it. The science is very, very clear in all directions. It is just very hard to face this.

The question is not if, but when.
But humans must try hard to slow down and then STOP the melting of those glaciers and ice packs.
Let not allow that to happen, but greed will always get in the way, models shows it every time.
A few ideas
We must reduce CO2 release into the air, in the US and Europe are starting to see there is a issue, now so does rest of the countries on the planet need to see that also. All world leader must do something ASAP.
As humans we must plant mass forest in the north and south parts of the planet, like in Australia - Africa – and South America. The sooner the better like in the next 0-8 year’s mass forest needs to be created in those countries.
Cooling the ocean currents is also a thing that must occur.
Oh here is a idea, try to make more ice just like they do for ski hills, that takes power, thank makes more co2, that makes the air warmer.
The up side, there is always a upside, at least we will have easy access to the loads of carbon (aka OIL) under the ice packs and easy get to. just think when it's 65deg F there what it will be at the equator, can you say SPF300.
I've been north of fairbanks Alaska in the summertime, 90+F, is that natural most likely not. Over the years I have traveled to Alaska for work, I got to see several glaciers and walked on them too. During my list trip I visited a glacier that loss about 1 mile of ice, and stood 200' plus high, now there was several more miles of ice left. But measure my life by how much has melted tells me before I die it will all be gone. Also well I was wearing shorts that day. so you can get and idea of how warm it was there.
At least when the sun goes down I will be yet one day closer to death, but what keeps me up at night is the survival of my children and there’s.
What I am most disappointed is that I have known about this kind of stuff back in the 1980’s, but back then when I talked about this to most people looked at me then like a deer looks at car headlights at night, a long blank look.
Good Luck Earthlings
Remember if it’s yellow let it mellow, but if it’s brown send it down.

There is no preventing it; it's way past that point.
Pan for gold in all the streams that will be exposed. That's my plan. Those that live at and near sea-level? They should have thought about it 30 years ago when scientists started going on about rising sea levels.

If you really care about the environment, you have to go vegetarian. Meat production causes extensive pollution and is a huge drain on our resources. It even causes more pollution than these SUVs people always complain about. It is also easy to become meat free and much kinder to animals. Meat is no longer needed as a food source as many other kinder options exist. In fact, most meat sold today is in the form of stuff like hamburgers and hot dogs and is bad for your health. The only real reason to eat meat is for entertainment and the animals pay the price for our entertainment as they are abused and slaughtered. It is hypocritical to say you care about the environment and love animals while eating meat.

They have mountains and they are on the equator.

we could either head for the mountains, start building an underwater city, or head for space and live in another planet.
or we could start being conscious of what we do to our environment. the science behind global warming is not yet definitive but it does not hurt to use less of those products that can contribute to global warming and to promote recycling.
