when you are sick?

your body will require energy to fight off the infection, moreso than when you're healthy - hence the feed a cold analogy, although it's not necessarily an increase in calories as it is a good balanced diet with vitamins and minerals.

your metabolism or basal metabolic rate should not change dramatically over the span of a common cold, which is only one week on average. your metabolism is going to be based on a number of long term factors most importantly that of your activity level. exercising more will increase your BMR - ie the rate at which you will burn calories at rest - due to the increase in muscle mass and decrease in fat mass.

for other diseases, especially long term or drastic ones such as cancer, your body can really get out of whack. . . but at that point elevating or decreasing your BMR should be the last thing on your mind
