What do you think the US army would be like if; Instead of going through collage and joining as an officer all soldiers join as enlisted and get promoted all the way up though the ranks from private to general. That way each general will know whats it like to be a private?

That sounds all well and good, but there's one problem. An enlisted person is a master of the technical field of their job. An officer cannot afford to bring such a focus to any one area, an officer has to be trained to think in terms of doctrine and strategic levels. In other words, while gaining the perspective of the private/airman/seaman/marine guy is important, what you give up in the area of strategic and operational perspective is not worth the exchange. Besides, any good officer gets on the ground with his troops and gets to know them and their problems also.

Why would a General need to know what it's like to be a Private? Is there something to be gained by that? Every General has a Sergeant Major (or Master Chief Petty Officer) to keep him advised of the enlisted side of his command. A General has too much on his shoulders to worry about the small details, such as how someone performs a particular function or what it feels like to be a Private. Does the Ford Motor Company CEO need to work on the assembly line as an installer in order to do his job of running the company? No. Would this help him run the corporation better? No.

The Idea is great.........in a practical world it just doesn't work. After a period of time you would have very few officers to command a large number of enlisted.

And so what ? The present structure has been adopted after hundreds, if not thousands, of years of trying other learning and hierarchical schemes.

you would have a worst army..you need some formal school of training..like a military college..maybe we need a more violant army..an army of killers..so our enemies would think twice before messing with us..
