The Prophet (pbuh) has told us of two kinds of jihad: The greater jihad and the lesser jihad. The greater jihad is the spiritual struggle a person needs to make to conquer his own selfishness, lust or greed. The lesser jihad is the struggle with external forces, where necessary.

Greater jihad is a battle with the self against temptations. It's a struggle to stay on the right path and to obey Allah and to avoid what is forbidden by Allah.
Lesser Jihad is to go in a battlefield and fight for the sake of ALlah (i'm almost certain; if i'm not may Allah forgive me! any Muslim please correct me if i'm wrong, jazakumullah)
