Not if you already have them. Nits feed from your scalp and you need to get rid of them with lotion or combing them out.
Once they have gone though it will help to prevent getting them again

In actual fact, buzzing your hair to a number 1 will not get rid of the nits, however shaving your head completely will, believe me, as a father of 3 boys who have all had nits and headlice (and kindly passed them onto me), there are 100's of chemical treatments out there ... and I believe some of them work on some people, however ... FACT: the only 100% way of ensuring that they no longer exist is to remove their home ... and that is the very base of the hair ... not the scalp as has been suggested, but the very base of the hair.

I originally buzzed my own hair to a #1 but the little critters were still there, tried no guard on the clippers ... still there, got quite drunk through frustration and shaved my head ... gone ... never to return.

By all means try the chemical treatments, shaving your hair off is rather extreme ... but if you want to be sure ... it is the only guaranteed method.

Good Luck

This is a headlice question?

We got rid of it off my son's head in four days by using Desert Essence tea tree shampoo and by using the lice combs and shampoo as directed. Using essential oils (do a search on google for "natural lice treatment") will help keep them off the head afterward (plus make the hair smell great! I also found that if you douse the head in olive oil, then cover with a shower cap for several hours, the lice will be smothered. You should comb out after this. There's also a 21 day program for removing lice (google it). I ended up getting it too; I had very long hair and cut it to shoulder length and was able to get rid of it in 6 days using these methods. So no reason to cut the hair if you don't want to. The nits lay very very close to the scalp, so cutting it only allows you to see them better. If you're a patient and careful comber you can get them all out without shaving. Good luck!

Do not shave the head in a desperate attempt to get rid of head lice. Head-shaving does not get rid of all of the nits, which are attached at the base of the hair shaft and extremely close to the scalp.

If you have head lice, the nits will stay on your scalp. You really need to get a bottle of RID. You can find it in just about any drug store and will run you between $5 and $10.

Comb your hair with a fine-tooth comb and make sure you are THOROUGH. Use the bathroom mirror or any mirror that has a good light source. Try to get someone to help you if you can.

Also, you need to wash EVERY PIECE of your linens that are on your bed. Wash in HOT water and put a little bleach in with your soap. Then make sure that everything is dried in the dryer.

You will also have to spray down your bed with a product that will get rid of lice -- this includes your pillows, mattress and boxspring. Make sure once you spray your pillows, wrap them in plastic wrap for 24 hours. This will ensure that your pillows aren't harboring any little "critters" and they will die. Or you can just buy new pillows (I opt for this choice).

You may still end up with eggs left in your hair near the roots. If possible get someone to check your hair for you afterwards.

Tea tree/ herbal shampoos are good, they seem to knock them out for a while, so they are easier to get out.

Most of the stuff you can buy still relies on someone going through you hair to get all remaining eggs out, otherwise you would be re-infested after 2 weeks.

Another thing you can do is get a lice comb and do your hair with just conditioner in everyday for 2 weeks. This should get rid of all lice that hatch before they have a chance to lay anymore eggs.

Good luck!
