He doesn't give a damn, he gives a bless!
Seriously, if there is no eternity, then this life really doesn't make any sense. Things just don't come out even. do good, and you can still suffer. You might even suffer more than some who only do evil. So life doesn't make sense. Unless there is an eternity. Then we have a whole different dimension.
God is just, and He is love. He cares about us, He has a loving reason for everything. We just don't necessarily see it yet.
EDIT:
I find it extremely distressing that people who claim to be believers are cutting you down, implying that you are ungrateful, that your difficulties are small, that you are blaspheming, or taking God's name in vain... I think they are people who haven't know much suffering in their lives.
Your question is perfectly legitimate. My prayer for you is that you'll find comfort in God - not the kind that too many religious "christians" give, unfortunately. God bless you!

It's funny. My entire life has been filled with "suffering" and I spent most of my life as an atheist. When I hit my lowest point I became a believer. God cared enough to pull me back from the brink. He loves all of us, and though it may not seem that way, He cares about you too. Stop questioning, open your heart and give Him a chance. There's a reason for all of this, and it's not up to us to determine the 'why' of it all. That remains hidden, but maybe someday you'll receive the answer you're looking for. Try to remain strong, and believe that everything will work out for the best. It usually does, just keep the faith.

The entire God notion is a man made fable!
The fact that you buy into this fable do not make the God real!
As for the near death experience idea of seeing a white light this is fiction of the brain! The exact same type of experience has been recreated in scientific tests.
When an astronaut is put in a machine that spins them around extremely fast they pass out and describe the exact same thing as the near deathers do! HOWEVER THESE MEN WERE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO DEATH!

Interesting choice of words, "gives a damn." Maybe it was a doctor that brought you back, or maybe your body just wasn't ready to quit yet. Your question intrigued me because I've been there too and asked the same question. Funny, though, that was over 25 years ago and I have done a LOT of living since then. Not always good, sometimes miserable, sometimes really awesome and inspiring. The point being that the dead know only one thing: It is better to be alive.

Don't waste your suffering. Become a Catholic and you will be united to Christ as a part of his body and offer your suffering up to the Almighty Father for the sins of the world and your sins. Some of the greatest Saints would pray to suffer and then it got to the point that their suffering was no longer suffering but, joy because they were so united to Christ. In this world our suffering is only justice. Look inside yourself see what sin is there and then look at a crucifix and see what it has done? How can one think that we don't deserve suffering. Those that do not think that do not know them self very well.

Didn't he send His son to die so we did not have to spend an eternity in Hell? I would think that would be the greatest love of all. Jesus suffered more than you will ever suffer in your life time. God never gives you a trial that you will not be able to handle. He loves you like his very own child and you are blessed to him. He wants you to pray, get mad, be happy, feel everything. Talk to him, you will find the answers. God Bless.

The human condition according to Buddhist tradition is a trial for the soul.
How you "deal" with life is a reflection of how your soul deals with eternity.
I think for the most part life is very good, fullfilling and rewarding. Suffering is in fact the big part of life that strengthens us through pain and suffering we gain perspective normal daily existence can't give us. I for example was born with one bum hand and lost a good portion of another in an accident as a teen. I felt God was giving me a bum rap and used it as an excuse to escape reality for 10 years. Eventually, I sobered up, and found out that living life is learning to accept ourselves as we are and deal with the hurdles life throws at us. If we face life head long each day as if it is our last I find that in the thick of it, I see miracles at every turn.
In AA it is called "Spiritual Awakening" a term coined by William James in the 1800s were we see ourselves as part OF and not apart from the universe.

I am so sorry for your suffering, but God uses suffering to draw us to Him. Your question, without the language you use is yes- He loves us so much that He gave His only begotten Son, and whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life. Jesus suffered on the cross for us, so that we can be drawn to Him. God saved you from dying at that time because He desires for you to come to Him, be forgiven of your sin and live for Him, and then you will realize how much He loves and cares for you, even in the midst of suffering.

God reveals his nature, character, and desire for us in his word the Bible. If you have questions about who he is and what he is like, that is where you need to go.
All the suffering we have in this life is a result of living in a fallen, sinful world. God will eventually bring all of this chaos back into order. God's desire for you is that you would come to know him in a personal way. That is clear in the Bible.
I've read and studied the Bible all my life, and I have tested it out and have found it to be true. I know this: Life is hard, but God is good.

I'm so sorry that you are going through pain and suffering. I know during that time it is only natural to question GOD or even the existance of GOD. God will not give us more than we can handle. You were meant to be here for a reason. You have more to learn or maybe you are touching someone elses life and making it better. For whatever reason, be thankful for another day. Try to stay positive and good luck.
