the percentage of fat in milk is very low anyway but low fat or skimmed is literally "skimmed" and a percentage of the fat is removed in this process.
full fat milk is no more than 1.8% fat
semiskimmed is around half and skimmed is 0.1% fat

low fat milk is made letting the milk separate before homogenization and removing the heavy cream on top. The cream is used to make products like butter, whipping cream, and half and half. The remainder is reduced fat milk. The amount of cream removed determines whether the remaining milk is 2%, 1%, or skim milk.

It all has to do with how much fat they strain off the top of regualr milk. Whole milk is milk straight from the cow - low fat milk has been put through a strainer to remove a lot of the fat. No water is added.

Milk comes from cows then a portion of the fat content is skimmed off the top.

I totally agree with your roommate. It tastes just like watery milk.

"Regular" milk is down to about 3.25 % fat (creme.)

Solids are removed until desired percentage is reached.

2% seems to be the most popular choice.

The way it is processed takes the fat out of it.
