Those who believe in voodoo and all similar techniques, I want to know what all is it based on? I mean how is it done? like chanting prayers for long long times to make it work for us, or praying ghosts or what else? those who really practice this can answer better.

Thanks in advance :)

During a fet (service) we follow regleman. We have a drummer that plays the beat for us. We have specific songs and dances for each lwa. If we wish for the lwa to come by and ride (possess) someone we put out there offerings, sing their songs, and dance for them. Small personal service can be done for the lwa however the same effect will not happen. Vodou is practiced in a group. You can attend public fets however initiation into a house will guarantee a better understanding of the religion. Initiation is not a requirement for learning and should not be taken lightly. Vodou is a lifetime of learning and devotion. If you wish to learn start with your ancestors and they will show you the way. Light a white candle and give them a cup of coffee. Talk to them everyday and they will hear you. There is so much more to the religion. Here are websites to help give you a better understanding. http://www.sosyetedumarche.com/Vodou_Info/vodou_info.html

edit: One thing I want to reiterate is the lwa are not Gods. There is only one God and its name is Bondye. The lwa are the equivalent of Angles or Saints. Also voodoo dolls, zombies, and curses are not part of the religion. The dolls are a form of sympathetic magic used alot in wicca and hoodoo (african american magic), zombies and curses are the work of the Bokor (a person that does any type of magic for a price).

I don't practice voodoo, but I have studied it
Iblis 696 - shut up, I'm sure people out there will say your stupid for certain beliefs. It's a two way street, when you point your finger at somebody, you have three pointing back at you.

The doll is a misconception. Voodoo is more ritualistic than my religion, wiccan, but both are in the pagan genra. there is celtic voodoo, asian voodoo, and african voodoo. Different country different practices.
The main point is they do rituals like such to promote good things: firtility ( for a woman or the earth) health, protection. Voodoo priestesses, are very spiritual and shamanistic in a way.

It is a very interesting study, along with many other religions

Basically, you are giving respect to the Creator, the Loa (lesser Gods in charge of various things), and to your ancestors. Giving respect ensures that you can work with Them for your needs.

actually it's rituals and offerings, the loas are powerful spirits who, like saints, were amazing beings in life, and were given the power to control the forces of nature
