What can be done for it other than taking it to the mechanic..

What exactly is leaking? Oil, water from the radiator (greenish), transmission fluid, brake fluid (both are reddish in color)? If it's water from the radiator, go to a local auto parts store and get a tube of Stop-Leak. It doesn't last forever, but it'll hold you over for a while. If it's leaking anything else, go to a mechanic.

If it's inside the car, it's most likely the heater core. You can try stop leak, but if that doesn't work, it will have to be replaced.
