These days the best Antivirus programs are Kapersky and NOD32.

Norton and McAfee used to be the best (years ago), but nowadays McAfee is so-so and Norton Internet Security is just awful, slowing down systems more than the viruses and spyware infections it's there to prevent.

Of the free programs. Avast and AVG are highly regarded anti-virus software.

ZoneAlarm is a very good firewall/security program, although the most important thing is to use a router instead of connecting your computer directly to a cable or dsl modem.

I don't know about the best, but the one I keep getting recommended by computer advisors is Norton Anti-virus. the one I use is aVast, and has been working great, it's also on the cheaper side.
