What a great question!

Mice and rats don't come in a multitude of colors, each one tasting different, so color vision isn't very important to our cats. They're also quite active at dusk and dawn - another reason why colors aren't a big deal. The retinal receptor cells called cones are responsible for color vision and research has shown that most of the cones in a cat' eye register green. There are, however, a few cones that register blue, and even fewer that are sensitive to very long light waves, beyond red.

With prolonged and very rigorous training, cats can be taught to discriminate between colors (but why?!). They're only interested in seeing it, not the color of it, and for that, brightness is more important. Rods are the receptor cells that are sensitive to dim and bright light. Where we have four rods to one cone, our cats have twenty five rods to one cone!

Another interesting fact - our cats can't see fine detail very well, and they have weak muscles in the eye to help focus. It's unlikely that our cats can focus on anything closer than about 30 inches. Their best range is from 6-20 feet.

Some fun facts!

I saw a show recently about this. Cats and dogs see in blues and greens. They are unable to see red.

No.. cats are only color blind.. meaning: The color green and red both appear as the color grey to a cat. They see all the other colors of the rainbow other then that.
