All of these answers are correct. This is only done in an emergency. The 747-400 can dump at 5000 LBS/per minute. You can dump anywhere that is over "unpopulated" areas. But it isn't specified over water. I have only had to dump fuel once in my life. There was a ton of paperwork/questions and I was told next time we would have to pay for the fuel lost.

The 747 can take off at much higher weights than it can safely land. In the case of an emergency on takeoff, the fuel has to be dumped in order to safely make an emergency landing. It can be dumped over water or in designated open land areas. If a plane launches in Kansas City, and has an emergency, even the FAA is bright enough to realize they can't be expected to fly out over the Gulf of Mexico to dump fuel in order to land.

Why do you want to know that answer? Yes a 747 can dump fuel but its not a normal procedure. A jet only dumps fuel in an emergency. Jet fuel is rated in pounds and I don't know how many pounds a 747 can dump or at what rate.

They don't dump fuel as a matter of routine practice. Ever. Do you dump $2.25 a gallon gasoline on the street for jollies?

Not all aircraft have the capability to dump fuel.

It is ONLY done in case of extreme emergency when it is necessary to reduce the weight of the aircraft to its maximum safe landing weight. Even then, if it will be safe to burn the fuel off and wait to land, then that's what will be done.

Others have said it well. Fuel is only dumped if they are afraid of a fire (emergency landing), or over weight for landing.
There is a dump valve in at least one wing, but I believe in both wings and a switch in the cockpit on the Flight Engineer's panel to turn it on and off. Fuel load is calculated by its weight, thousands of pounds.

They would only dump if:

1, they were attempting an unusual landing and wanted to get rid of as much fuel as possible to cut down on the fire.

2, They took off with a full load, had to return for a maintenance problem, and they need to dump fuel to land within safe weight allowances. Commercial aircraft can take off with a heavier load than they can land with, and believe it or not, they still need fuel in the wings for a safe landing.

gas unload isn't accessible on all planes yet somewhat on some planes who've a some distance better take off weight than landing weight. that's in basic terms executed in an emergency. The 747-4 hundred can unload at 5000 LBS/consistent with minute. It takes over 20 minutes to dry the tanks up (giving some padding). you could unload everywhere this is over "unpopulated" areas. although that's not detailed over water. I somewhat have in basic terms had to offload gas as quickly as in my existence. there became a ton of place of work work/questions and that i became advised next time we could would desire to pay for the gas misplaced.

There are levers in the cockpit to jettison the fuel if they need to. it is basically a dump valve, once activated, the fuel will be dumped, or jettisoned. The pilots will jettison the fuel if their landing weight is too heavy. If the plane is unevenly balanced because of fuel, the pilots will activate the fuel crossover lever, which moves fuel from one tank to another.

they dont dump fuel unless there is an emergency if a crash landing is not avoidable they will fly until the fuel load is reduced if they can t fly they may dump
