I've let my kids watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre...they're 11 and 14, the 21 year old can do as he pleases.....but I haven't allowed the younger ones to view The Passion. There's a limit to the amount of brutality anyone should witness, let alone endure.

There is a big difference between meaningless violence and factual violence that effects our life. I don't let my children listen to the news because there are so many upsetting stories like a baby being microwaved, and people being lost in the woods in snow storms. These things are disturbing, like the chainsaw massacre. However, the Passion is what Christ truly suffered for us. Now, I won't let my very young children see it, only those who are of the age that they understand, like above 9, depending on the maturity of the child.

Let me clarify my point on this, some things are just too disturbing for even an adult. TCM is one of those, along with many stories on the news. It may be happening in our world right now for real, but it is hard enough for me to swallow, let alone a child. They should have a time to enjoy innocence and just be happy. When they become old enough and curious on their own about Christ, I will allow them to see the Passion.

This is a question that is really based on your level of faith. If you are a faithful person who wants to raise your children in the faith, then you can judge when they are ready to be able to fully appreciate the Passion.

I won't let them watch The Chainsaw Massacre because I don't even want to watch something so disturbing. This movie is based solely on entertainment, the Passion is not about entertainment, it is for understanding of what Christ suffered for your soul. If I let them watch TCM, it is only for entertainment.

The same thing goes for human suffering in general. If you have an ailment you should offer your suffering in prayer, instead of wasting it in self pity. This is part of the message of Christ.

Merry Christmas!!!

Good question. Some will arge the Passion was history and Jesus suffered for us but dam that was pretty gory and true. Horror flicks are not true, my kids love them and they know it is not real, whereas, the passion was, it bothered them more ( they had to look away during the beating) but do not look away when Michael Myers is slitting someones throat.
P.S. Bluebird of Happiness, I agree with you totally, always had my kids watch holocost films etc. they need to know what the world was and is about.

i took my high school youth group to see it after our fasting weekend... the high schoolers couldn't even watch it! I agree the original TCM was a lot less graphic then the passion... maybe that's why so many found the passion so moving... it was kind of like being there (well minus all the devil appearing and Judas hallucinating)

and to war4thelord... TCM is based on a true story too... they never caught the guy... look into it.

I remember that when I was a young kid I cried when I watched a film about the passion of Christ and learning that He went through all that for us all. If my memory serves me right, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was about a maniac -- so not quite the same thing. The film "The Passion of Christ" is a bit too graphic and it is about TORTURE and not quite about Christ. The FOCUS of the film is torture and yes I would not allow my kids to watch it.

nicely it relies upon if the 15 12 months previous is scared incredibly or no longer, in the event that they have a good abdomen, and if the often get nightmares you ought to to take that into attention

I wouldn't let them watch either movie.

Come to think of it, the Bible is a pretty horrific book filled with immoral sexuality and violence.

If I won't let my child look at a Hustler, I shouldn't let him look at the Bible. At least the Bible doesn't normally have pictures associated with the acts.

Edit: As far as watching the "truth," would you allow those children to watch "Faces of Death"? According to popular legend, not only do those movies portray death truthfully, but there are actual deaths on the film. Is Passion of the Christ the only violent movie you'd let your children watch, or will any snuff film do?

The Passion of Christ was gratuitously violent. I can't take violent movies. Good observation.

Oh I know. ME! Me! Me! I watched the Passion with my 10 year old. She needs to know the truth, not fiction.

We would not allow our kids to watch either. They're too young.
