Why is it that start and stop bits can be eliminated when character interleaving is used in synchronous TDM?

They are not really, its just that the data becomes the payload to a framing carrier, So the data is transparent/irrelevant to the actual carrier. In TDM the interleaved channel is transmitted regardless of weather there is any data in the payload. So it is the framing protocol that is signalling, its called Robbed bit Signalling. Channels without any data transmit ALL 1's.

asynchronous communications require start and stop. synchronous use the same clock and dont need start and stop?
