what is the possibilty of a son who's mother is suffering from schizophrenia might have that too...

its my boyfriend that im afraid might have it...his mother has schizophrenia...some of my family members advised me to dump him as they said that its for the sake of my future generation...they dont want my kids to have it...i just dont know what to do...

Here is what I found on the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society webpage. You should see a doctor if you are really worried about this, though - good luck! On a side note, I have a good friend that suffers from schizophrenia, and I have to say that personally I would not have a child even with just a 10% chance of it developing the illness (say, if I were schizophrenic or my partner was), because it really is so difficult to live with... just my two cents...
"There is no way of knowing exactly who will get schizophrenia. However, about 1 in 100 people worldwide have the illness. Since schizophrenia tends to run in families, your chances may be higher if someone in your family has the disease. For example, it is estimated that:
· If one of your parents or a brother or sister is ill, the risk factor is about 10%
· If both your parents are ill, your chances are about 40%

Schizophrenia does run in families, therefore it is hereditary to some extent. However, just because a mother has the disorder doesn't mean that her children will have it. There are also families in which no family history of schizophrenia or mental illness is known, but a member still develops the disorder. The onset of schizophrenia can come on gradually or suddenly, sometimes with the first episode being triggered by a stressful situation. Usually the symptoms begin in the mid-20's...sometimes earlier, sometimes later. If you are concerned that someone may have the disorder, you should help them to see a psychiatrist. Schizophrenia is fully manageable with medications.

Their is a genetic predispotition,so keep calm,dont stress your mind thinking about it because the power of the mind can be outstanding.It would be much worse if both parents suffer from the disease.If you have any kind of anxiety about this topic speek to a specialist to calm you down.DONT WORRY BE HAPPY!

its a type of genetical disease but dont worry u get it checked by your doc.its not necessary that if a mother has it her son might get it.

Yes, it is genetic. However, it can also pass down as milder disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, OCD, or Autism.
