I am a pharmacy technician and Zytec is:
Zyrtec is a prescription medicine that is used to treat allergies in children. It is popular because it is dosed just once a day and can be given to infants as young as six months old.
Used For:
Zyrtec is indicated to treat indoor or perennial allergic rhinitis in children 6 months of age and older. It can also be used to treat children with outdoor or seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria in children over age 2 years old. Keep in mind that allergic rhinitis refers to the same thing as hay fever or what many parents simply call 'allergies' when their kids have sneezing, a runny nose, red itchy eyes, and an itchy nose.
Side Effects:
Zyrtec is usually well tolerated by most children and few children have to stop taking it because of side effects. When they occur, side effects are usually mild to moderate and can include headache, sore throat, abdominal pain, coughing, somnolence (drowsiness), diarrhea, epistaxis (nosebleeds), bronchospasm (wheezing), nausea, and vomiting.
If Zyrtec doesn't work for your child/you, alternative allergy medicines might include Allegra, Claritin, Clarinex, and/or Singulair. Steroid nasal sprays, such as Flonase, Nasonex, or Rhinocort Aqua, might also be prescribed, depending on your child's age.
I hope that helps.

Zyrtec is an antihistamine. It's main indication is for allergy symptoms of runny nose, watery eyes, and rashes. Basicly it works like Benadryl but is less sedating or not sedating at all due to the size of the molecule. (The larger the molecule, the less likely that is passes into the central nervous system this is why Claritin, Clarinex and Allegra do not cause drowsiness)
It comes as Zyrtec 10 mg, Zyrtec D (antihistamine+decongestant) and Zyrtec syrup

ZYRTEC® is a prescription medicine that treats both indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms, as well as chronic hives.
When you have an allergic reaction, your body makes something called histamine. Histamine causes you to have allergy symptoms. Things like sneezing and itchy eyes.
ZYRTEC® is an antihistamine, which helps block the action of histamine to help relieve you of your indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms, like itchy, red, watery eyes ,sneezing and runny, itchy nose...
