No, it's not to shake your fist at them and make obscene hand gestures. It's really easy. You sit two feet off their rear bumper until they finally move over to the right. Just wait...you don't even need to get angry. They will eventually get nervous with you there and move over to the right. Trust me. I tried this tactic this morning and it works beautifully!!

What? You think this is dangerous? I agree. Move over. Do you think this is rude? So is driving the speed limit in the far left lane. Move over. Do you think speeding is against the law? Yes it is. Please, become a cop. Until then, please move over. Is this totally annoying? I sure hope so. Move over. Oh, and please get off your cell phone.

Seriously, I prefer not to have to swerve around you to the right. Instead, I'm going to sit so close to your bumper, you will barely be able to see my tiny little car out your rear mirror.

I used to get angry, but not this morning. I even cut commute time.

I drive over the speed limit. I might go to hell, but that's just the way it is. I also haven't gotten a ticket in about 10 years. If I do, I understand that I deserve it and accept the responsibility for my actions. I never do anything I can't accept the consequences for.

We have five lanes where I live...even less of a reason to be hogging the passing lane.

Here is what I don't understand...If this post makes you angry, why don't you just get over to the right? It's not that big of a deal. I purposely worded it to get a reaction from you...Just move over!! Problem solved!!

I have to agree with the situation although following to close is not the answer.

If I am doin 70 and the car in front of me is not I may get close at first then slow down to a respectable difference, give the person a few moments to move over (as long as the other lane is clear) But please don't sit there. When a car comes up behind you, be courteous and let them pass. Then you are not aggravated by being tailgated and flashed, they are not aggravated by being forced to slow down and make a move around. Everyone is happy and life goes on.

As for me, I travel to and from work on a two lane highway, the Parkway in CT. Beautiful road with lots of twisties to make a fun excursion on. But I am forced to pass on the right on so many occassions. And if I am passing you on the right because you are doing 50 and me 70, there is no reason for you to speed up to 72 just to keep me behind you then slow back down again. This does not teach anyone a lesson, only makes the person behind you angrier.

And pissing people off is not right. Who knows who the person is, or what is in their glove box. You could be pissing off an off duty cop or his wife or some guy who was just canned at the office and now you have become his target for road rage. They don't leave you alone, they would rather follow you back to your house then keep going with traffic. Now you have a problem...

In Germany I love their driving laws:

1) Pedestrians do not have the right of way in Germany, if they are hit in a crosswalk it is because they were not looking. The road is for cars!

2) You must be 18 to drive, and 16 to drink, not to mention it costs over $500 US to get your license in Germany so to them it really is a privelege.

3) Making gestures and faces can get you a ticket and a suspension (revoking) on your license.

4) When on a highway traveling in the right lane is the ONLY lane you are allowed to be in, UNLESS you are passing. At which point you get into the left lane only when it is safe to do so and pass. Once you have passed then you return to the right lane.

Just like the Audobahn (granted the speeds are great!) but in some areas there is no speed limit so you can being doing 100mph in the left lane to pass a lorry when you must get over because a Porsche is coming up at you at 110mph. If you sat there and made him slow down, you can get pulled over for blocking traffic and not yielding right of way. And he is not permitted to pass on the right AT ALL.

I think we could learn a thing or two from the Germans.

ive wondered that since i started driving. some reasons ive come up with over the years: -they dont like people driving fast and do what they can to slow em down. if they only realized the futility of this action. theyre not omnipresent. -they arent good enough drivers or r just too lazy to deal with merging traffic. -they want to drive w the cruise control on n as long as theyre the slowest car in their lane, they wont have to turn it off n hit reset. to the last 2 i say its a shame all of us have to suffer for the few, but they r the types that arent ever gonna care about the next person. -they r huge a h's who derive pleasure from others pain. thats why i never let the person going slow in front of me know that it bothers me. whether driving on a single lane or multilane highway. they aint gonna go any faster anyway. - they like to see all the people behind them while almost noones in front of them. i guess it makes em feel like a leader. or that theyre controlling the situation. how sad that they have such little real control in their lives. -in my state its a law to keep right except to pass. so many think speeding is breaking an important law but this law isnt. they can choose the laws everyone has to obey. -the worst is when theyre going like 5 mph faster than the speed limit but still slower then the traffic to their right. i was a passenger in a car being driven by a girl doing this. i asked her why, n she said 5 mph over was fast enough. i pointed out that she was breaking the law, and was ok with anyone else breaking the law, just as long as it was within her perameters. like its her place to say to everyone, "you can speed, but only as much as i say". to her credit she saw my point and agreed w me, n as far as i know doesnt drive like that any more.

Actually, there was a case in Canada app. two years ago of two friends in two separate cars who deliberately drove the speed limit down two lanes of our biggest 3 lane highway(401). They were doing it to make a point but were pulled over by the police and charged with obstructing traffic and dangerous driving.
I agree there is no reason to sit doing the speed limit in the passing lane. Show some consideration for us speed bugs!!!!!!

i agree with you in this situation where we have drivers who drive the speed limit on the far left lane. even for me, i dont really like drivers who drives the speed limit on the left lane, since it can disrupt the flow of traffic. there are drivers who are nice and courteous enough to move to the slower lane and let the faster driver pass, and some who are too stubborn, and want people behind them to abide the speed they are going.

However, it is not going to solve anything if you follow the slow moving driver very close; its just going to aggrevate them. not only will it make them very angry, but it can also enable them to do some dangerous stunts as well, like slaming on their brakes on purpose.

if the driver in front of you is not willing to change lane, just let it be, and keep an adequate distance behind them and wait for an open lane to pass that driver. it is better to drive DEFENSIVELY than to take vengance toward that driver.

If they're doing the speed limit then you have to go around them. What makes you think you get to make up the rules according to your way of driving. If people do to me what you did this morning I would slam on my brakes and when you hit the rear end of my car you will be responsible for the damage and your insurance will go up in price. See, your not so smart. Go ahead and cut your commute time and take a chance of messing up your car and others. Just leave the house 15 minutes earlier for work.

??? people in the passing lane are suppose to be going the speed limit also, and use that lane to pass those who are not going the speed limit,,,, i think if more of us would get in all lanes and go the speed limit, it would cut down on deaths and accidents,,,, some seem to think the speed limit is for those who want to go slow to maintain, as opposed to the speed limit is the maximum anyone should drive under optimum conditions, slow down if its night/raining/snowing etc ,,,, slow drivers do not irritate me or make me angry,,, fast ones do, then i end up sitting in a traffic jam due to their accidents and them not leaving enough response time when an accident occurs in front of them,,,,,, i say go the speed limit, and allow distances between you and the car in front of you , if they slam on the brakes, when you tail their bumper, and you hit them, you do realize that your at fault? both for material damage and human injuries,,,,, and some people i know will purposely do this, if you sit on their bumper,,,,,,

I SO AGREE.......the law states that the right lane is for regular driving and the left lane is for passing. The only time a car should even be in the left lane is if they are passing another car. I usually ride their bumper and give them a dirty look when I finally pass. Its always these people who think they are "god's gift" and who are above the law. Like you said, what your doing might be illegal but technically riding in the passing lane is illegal too.

there is a speed limit for a reason. People like you are the reason there are accidents. Just wait til someone slams their breaks on your sorry ***. You'll be at fault because you are behind them so closely. I hope you get a whole bunch of tickets. I turned onto a road one time and the speedlimit was 45. I turned on and got up to speed before this huge redneck truck pulled up behind me. He was in a hurry and turned his high beams on me and was tailgating me. I had my little brother in the car, my boyfriend and my twin sister. These are very important people to me and I don't want them hurt. What if someone did this to your mom, girlfriend, boyfriend (whatev preference) dad sister or brother or someone close to you and it caused an accident? This is why the world is so bad. Nobody could possibly be in that much of a hurry. You make me sick. Maybe you should wake up earlier so you can get to work on time.

Can tell you don't live in Texas.. Around here anyone who hits your rear bumper is automatically at fault, and giving that we are most likely talking about a freeway, most likely buying you a new car.

Tapping on or even locking up on the brakes around here is a common solution for tailgaters.. I feel your pain man, but best to just wait for that opening and leave them in the dust.

Unfortunately, tailgating is what you are doing, and it is as serious of an offense as speeding. Unfortunately, speed sticklers in the left lane are annoying, but the only thing you can do is pass on the right, and even that can be illegal. it is dangerous to tailgate, and all it will do is cause the driver in front of you to slow down.
