There is a great product you can buy in most pet stores called Feliway. I used it one year to keep my cats out of our tree, and it helped. Heads up though: I didn't like how it smelled, but I am the only person I know who can actually smell it.

The first year we had our youngest cat, he was fascinated with the ribbons and shiny ornaments and we would always find a few on the floor in the morning. The second year, we locked them both in the back of the house for the entire duration of the Christmas tree process (bringing it in, setting it up, decorating it) and let them out only when everything was done and the boxes were put away. He never once touched a thing on that tree, barely even looked at it the whole time it was up. They would sleep on the tree skirt behind the trunk sometimes, but never touched the ornaments or branches. But he's a monkey-see moneky-do cat, so since he didn't see US playing with it, it never crossed HIS mind to do so himself. Our oldest one, well she's just a skittish little thing and all we had to do was tell her a couple stern no's the first tree we had with her and she left it alone. She liked to look, but knew better than to touch. The monkey see monkey do theory worked a little on her too, I think.

I just found this spray at the local pet supply. It's called 'Boundary' and can be used indoors and outdoors. I bought it to protect my plants, and the store owner said other customers use it to protect their Christmas trees. She said the spray has been around for many years. Very easy to use. There's a slight odor, at first, but it dissipates.

When you see your cat near the tree spray it with water or shake a loud can of pennies, they hate that and it will connect that with the tree & stop doing it.

I agree with the vinegar, they do not like the smell of it. I mix it w/ some water & spray around the tree. It's been working for me for the past two weeks.

the only thing you can do it string it up with fishing line, to a wall or somthing, so if the cat climbs it, at least ot wont go over.
