It's a "religon" created by L. Ron Hubbard. He created it after his failure as a Science Fiction writer. I think it must offer celebrities a way to feel good about themselves after being egotistical jerks.

The truth is, all their spiritual beliefs were copied from Hubbard's old Sci-fi books.

No offence taken, but this is what the Scientology religion actually is:
Scientology is an applied religious philosophy. When I say "applied" I mean you actually use it in your life to change or improve existing conditions. It is a very practical religion.
All religions if you learn about them have a basic philosphy, but they also have certain dogma, rituals and observances, and a certain faith or belief is required. There is nothing wrong with this, but Scientology is not that kind of religion. It does not intrude on anyones faiths of beliefs particularly in the area of God , the Supreme Being, or the Infinite. This area is left totally up to the indivdual, which is why you can be a practicing Jew,for example and still use and apply the priniciples of Scientology in your life. It does not conflict. If anything it will enhance your understanding of your chosen religious practice.
You can have no specific religious beliefs and still benefit from using it.
And it is only true for you according to your own observation and experience with it.
It is a non denominational religion . The dictionary definition that applies:
Religion: The spiritual or emotional attitude of one who recognises the existence of superhuman power or powers.

The most basic principle of Scientology is that YOU are your own immortal soul, that this is not a "thing" you HAVE but what YOU actually are.
The whole purpose of Scientology is to increase an individual's understanding and awareness of himself. and lifeAnd thereby his native abilities .
When you do this the sphere and zone of his positive influence increases and moves outward into his life, his family ,his friends, his groups and mankind which he is part of.

How this result is achieved is the "technology" of Scientology, which was developed by L.Ron Hubbard after his extensive research and the discoveries he made, about the human spirit. The basic religious philosophy and knowledge of Scientology is very old, going back 10,000 years at least to the Veda or Vedic Hymns from the East. L. Ron Hubbard researched and made new discoveries about the human spirit. He developed technology from these discoveries to apply to increase spiritual awareness and ability.
He completed his research before his death in 1986 and left all of his results and copyrights
to the Church of Scientology along with most of his considerable personal estate, when he died.

He published a book in 1951 to communicate the basic principles he discovered called: " Scientology The Fundementals of Thought"
There are currently over 10 million Scientologists in more than 163 countries world wide. However we are a new religion, only 53 years old.
The true story of Scientology as a religion goes like this:
1. A philosopher developes a philosophy about life and death.
2. People find it interesting.
3. People find it works.
4. People pass it along to others.
5. It grows.

This is just an overview.
L. Ron Hubbard explained fully the theology and technologies of Scientology in more than 500,000 pages of writings, including dozens of books and over 2,000 tape-recorded public lectures. So it's not possible to fully answer your question on this forum.

There are very definite levels involved. It is a very exact route
or bridge to higher states of ability and awareness. The gains of each step must be fully attained before moving onto the next.
This route is fully laid out and is the result of L.Ron Hubbard's research and developements in the subject of the human spirit.
We call it the Bridge to Total Freedom.
You can get a copy of it from your local Scientology Church or Mission if you want to know more about these levels.
Belief in aliens is not required, or even part of Scientology for that matter.

It's a fadish cult for the rich and famous started by a novelist and huckster named Ron L. Hubbard. The book Dianetics started up the fad that developed into a whirlwind culture. In layman's terms it's psycology without the drugs, just that you're dumping as much money to be "cured" that a junkie forks out to get "better".

Ron L. Hubbard is not and was never a psychologist and self-taught himself at home. Furthermore his diluted and delusional concepts seem to prey on the misinformed and nieve people. Tom Cruise has been a mouthpiece for the cult, but he is NOT a founder, just a member who feels he's been "cured".

9 times out of 10, the people into Scientology are people who are junkies, nieve people, rich people who think this will make them better people, new ager types, and the list can go on for a long time.

The levels mentioned are not ranks, like the Masons, but levels are used to measure your level of "reformed" consciousness. Otherwise, your level of "healing". The chart is expensive to own, but sometimes there are cheap versions and some members may let you share theirs.

I lived around Scientologist for several years and I even gave it a try. For me it's total complete bunk. For my neighbors, they seem to purposely want to be wallowing in igorant bliss. However, their meth addictions are still at full swing and they drink like a fish. And while under the influence of the drugs and alcohol, they try to tell others how scientology works for them. So the so called healing this cult provides isn't doing them so well.

I wonder if CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien should have turned around, made a cult, and told people elves, dwarves, and halflings are real. They could have some cool mottos like: Have you hugged a Balrog today?
Does this help?

Scientology is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, others and all of life. The Scientology religion comprises a body of knowledge extending from certain fundamental truths. Prime among these:

Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized — and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.

In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.

L Ron Hubbard is the founder of Scientology. Food for thought: he was a SCIENCE FICTION writer.

Kind of begs the question how someone like John Travolta could be a Scientologist, doesn't it. He seems smarter than that.

Tom Cruise on the other hand? Scientology is PERFECT for him. He's a wacko anyway.

Some say it's a cult because of their methods of indoctrination. The fact that they believe Xenu killed billions of alien spirits about 75 million years ago doesn't make it a cult. Just like believing in talking snakes, a magical invisible man, and an afterlife place of eternal torture created by a loving god doesn't make Christianity a cult.

If you are indoctrinated over a period of time, like most Americans are into their respective religions, it is just another religion. It's just as valid and has the same amount of proof.

Scientology is a body of teachings and related techniques developed by American author L. Ron Hubbard. It began in 1952 as a self-help philosophy, an outgrowth of his earlier self-help system, Dianetics. It claims to offer "an exact methodology to help humans achieve awareness of their spiritual existence across many lifetimes and, simultaneously, to become more effective in the physical world." The name "Scientology" is also used to refer to the often controversial Church of Scientology, the largest organization promoting the practice of Scientology, which is itself part of a network of affiliated corporations that claim ownership and sole authority to disseminate Dianetics and Scientology.

A stated goal of Scientology is to "rehabilitate" the thetan (roughly equivalent to the soul) to regain its native state of "total freedom." Church spokesmen and practitioners attest that Hubbard's teachings (called "Technology" or "Tech" in Scientology terminology) have saved them from a plethora of problems and enabled them to better realize their highest potential in business and their personal lives.[1][2] However, outside observers—including journalists, lawmakers, and national governing bodies of several countries—have reached conclusions about Scientology that are sharply at odds with the Church's self-representations. These include allegations that the church is an unscrupulous commercial enterprise that harasses its critics and brutally exploits its members.[3][4]

Although believers may be free to openly practice Scientology, the organized Church of Scientology has often encountered opposition. While a number of nations now accept the Church as a bona fide religious organization entitled to the protections and tax relief that such status brings, it has also been attacked by governments as a pseudoreligion, a cult, or a transnational corporation.
