If you get an upgrade, you'll likely save them. If you install the full version (not an upgrade) it will reformat the drive. I'm running into the same problem on my machine... I want to install 64-bit XP but it's going to take alot of work.

i wouldn't recomand an upgrade, a complete installation with format would be better. if you have at least 2 partitions on your hard drive, you must format only the one where you've got the windows installed, so you can ship all your data on the other one(s). of course, if you mean word as installed program, it wil be deleted too, you have to reinstall all programs.
but about upgrading: i did exactly this upgrade because of a defective ME modem driver and in XP i had the same error. after one complete reinstall the error dissapeared. so i say it again: do not upgrade!!!!!

An XP upgrade is suppose to be able to allow you to keep your files, settings, etc. HOWEVER, as an IT professional, the upgrade rarely works as advertised. In most instances you'll have to re-install your programs. I would save your data and be prepared to re-install any of your programs in case the XP upgrade works as usual.

No it will not delete anything if you do an upgrade. All your documents will still remain. The older programs you have may not work though. Check for compatability with XP.

Not if you do an upgrade, but back up and save all your documents just in case. You will need to download new drivers for your programs and add-ons, like printer, scanner, etc.

yes it will also make sure you run the compatability program and get what ever it says you're going to need make sure to print it out for future use

ps
when you save your files make sure you don't save the shortcut to the file but save the file
