The above answer is almost the full story and is very close to the right answer.

The main reason Party left the US is because of its geographical location and the fact that it is on the London stock market. Directors did not want to find themselves in trouble when the visited the US on business trips, so they decided it wasn't worth the hassle.

Other sites like PokerStars.com are based elsewhere and are privately operated. They don't have to worry about being on the stock market and other issues that could cause problems with the new laws.

Poker is not illegal in the US and you are not going to be arrested for playing. This new law is a con trick on the American people and is undemocratic. It was introduced for political reasons. It will be several months before it actually becomes law, and there are many who think it will be watered down anyway.

For now Poker Stars and others are here to stay.

Poker Stars made the following public statement that they are staying in the US market:

As we are sure you are all aware, the U.S. Congress recently passed new legislation that may eventually have a significant impact on the online poker industry.

While the intent of this new legislation is to eventually prevent the transfer of funds

In fact, unlike many of our competitors, we have no intention of abandoning our U.S. customers. We plan to continue our normal operations while the regulators, the banking industry and, very likely, the judicial system hammer out all of the details regarding this legislation.

Most importantly, we want you to know that all monies entrusted to Full Tilt Poker from our customers remain completely safe and secure, and that all players and affiliates will be able to transfer funds to and from Full Tilt Poker as usual, using all of our normal payment processors. In short, while the long-term outlook for the industry is likely to change in some fashion, Full Tilt Poker will continue to provide its players and affiliates with the best online poker experience in the world.

The above answer is 100% incorrect.

There's NOTHING illegal about gambling online in the U.S. You cannot be arrested in your home for playing poker on an online site.

The illegality stems from financial transactions between American banks & gambling sites.

These financial institutions have 270 days from the time when the law went into effect to comply with the law - so - right now as we speak - there's nothing technically illegal going on.

PartyPoker threw their hands up & gave up.

Sites like PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker believe that their sites operate legally, despite the law - and - for now anyway - remain open to U.S. customers.

No pokerstars.com will not ban U.S. players. My girl friends and I play at most of the sites at http://upnorthbetting.net
With the new banking laws my advice would be open a Neteller account so you can play for real money.
The main thing is to Have Fun.
Good Luck!!!

Poker stars is a private company. Party Poker is a public company (has stock). I doubt that Poker Starts will ban US players because it has not pressure from it's shareholders.

Pokerstars won't become play only. You can read their press release regarding this very question here http://www.ultimatepokerbankroll.com/article.php/internet-gambling-ban-poker-sites-status and you can see they have talked to their lawyers and have no plans to leave the US market in anyway.

Party Poker left because they are publically owned and stockholders might not like them staying in the US market.
