Because of the verse that says "Spare the rod and spoil the child"
I was raised by Christian fanatics. I still carry many knots and scars on my body where I was burned with cigarettes, and beaten with broom handles and anything they could get their hands on.
Actually there is a lot of Jesus life in the scriptures that were thrown out of the bible at the Nicean Council. Namely the books Infancy I and Infancy II, and the Gospel of Thomas.

EDITED FOR AN ATHEIST PERSPECTIVE
Why do atheist beat and kill their women?
Your question sounds like hatred and predjudice, I see evidence of beating on both sides of the fence.
If you even attempted to remove predjudice from your religious thought, you would see that the Christian religion -can- make sense. You choose the violent hate speech spread in place of truth by many of the non-Christian religions, rather than reasoning the question from both sides. It creates a crippled morality in your soul, without understanding for good people of other religions and yields this sort of "why does such and such predjudice category do such and such evil thing..."
I love you.
To answer the question. All of mankind if given to vices and so forth. Those with weak will or morality may stoop to the point of beating children. The is also a lack of community and family involvement in these crimes, but in the end the guilt lies on those who would actually injure a child.

The bible says something like "spare the rod, spoil the child."
So there is biblical support for hitting children.
There is also biblical support that God hates it when a bald man is insulted and will send bears to kill all of the kids making fun of the bald man.
So Christians pick and choose from the Bible and the sensible ones do not beat their kids with rods or take in slaves.
It is a fair question though. Jesus was probably spanked, not sure if he did anything bad enough to be beaten with a metal rod though.

I don't.
My son isn't perfect, but he's never been hit or spanked.
Many well-meaning Christians go overboard with the "spare the rod" mentality. There's nothing wrong with a simple spanking, but much more than that would constitute abuse.
I was spanked as a child, but not abused. For whatever reason, I just can't spank my son. I just don't want him to learn to solve problems with violence. Many times kids "get it" because they made their parents mad, [pushed them over the line] and not because they really did anything THAT bad.
Yes, Jesus lived a perfect life while on Earth. That is a Christian assumption. Jesus is divine. He is sinless, and was sinless while on Earth as a man.

Someone woke up grumpy this morning?
People in general spank their children. Nothing wrong with it as long as it's not beating or abusive.
Abusive parents beat and abuse their child in more ways than I care to think about. They are from all walks of life with different beliefs, cultures and religion.
Your assumption that it's Christians only makes you look very foolish.
Every child (adults too) needs rules, boundaries and limitation. Without them...you will have a rude and disrespectful child and they turn into rude and disrespectful adults.
"Spare the rod and spoil the child" means to discipline the child, nowhere does it say to beat or abuse them.

Um Christians aren't the only people who beat their children. Every race and religion have people with in who abuse their children. And there is a fine line between punishment and abuse. Spare the rod spoil the child, although I think most people take this to far way to far. And to answer your question, Jesus was man as well as divine. I'm sure he had his moments of being difficult.

WHY DO YOU SO MUCH AND CLAIM IT TO BE TRUE?
We do NOT beat and whip our children. We do spank our children when needed, not out of anger, but out of love. This baloney of time outs, and only reward them if they are good pay no attention to them when they are bad, this garbage that was taught by so called "Dr" Spock is the main reason children and most teenagers today are such spoiled rotten BRATS. IF YOU DO NOT DISCIPLINE YOUR CHILDREN YOU HATE THEM!! If you love someone you discipline them and teach them the right way to do things and always in love.

Who says they do. I would question your definition of a Christian. Though none of us are without sin and all fall short(we all make mistakes and loose our tempers), Jesus teaches us that we were given emotions, so it isn't a sin to feel angry or upset but the emphasis is on what actions we take, what we do with those emotions that is the true key to a good follower of Christ.

Most Christians don't beat their kids. However, many do believe that if you "spare the rod, you spoil the child." I was spanked as a child, and I turned out all right. I have no violent tendencies. Plus, I stayed out of trouble!
