When God gave Adam the 'spark' of life to get him concious, Adam needed that spark sustained.
Neshamah is breath (or breathing) by which the 'spark' of life is maintained.
Biological science testifies to this fact.
This is evident by the separation of death into two classifications:
Somatic death (sometimes called clinical death), which is the absolute cessation of the functions of the brain, as well as of the circulatory and the respiratory organs.
AND
death of the tissues (sometimes termed biological death), the disappearance of the vital actions of the constituents of the body.

So even though somatic death has taken place, the life-force still lingers in the cells of the body’s tissues until eventually every cell dies completely (death of the tissues).

10 points for you because you are correct. As was brought out in you last comment, the Hebrew word for soul is 'nephesh', the Greek word for soul is 'psykhe'. Neshamah is Hebrew for breath, which sustains nephesh or soul.
Also animals are likewise said to have souls: Gen:1:20,21,24,25;(the Hebrew word nephesh is used)

Neshama means soul, and nefesh means spirit.
Animals have spirits, not souls.
