I'd pass on the suggestion about offering a cigarette. And besides, there are so many other fun ways to get a girl's attention. Just pay attention to her, tell her she looks great today, offer assistance in some form (help her w/her books, her car, whatever). Once she is aware that you are giving her your undivided attention...it's all good from there. Just don't try to come across like a player and flirt with every other girl in the room as well. the best way to get a girl's attention is to find out what she is interested in and talk to her about it. start a simple conversation, but don't come off too strong. let her know you're interested. it'll pay off trust me.

find out what she likes and who her friends are and what she likes to do for fun. if you go into a conversation armed with ideas on what to talk about it'll make the first conversation less awkward. you could invite her to go for coffee or to lunch (dinner is a little awkward for a first date). good luck!!
