When we cry we put pressure into our heads. This pressure causes a backup of tears into our eyes from our noses. We also increase our blood flow to our face and eyes, which causes an increase in the amount of tears. These two things cause our eyes to be over filled with tears. And because we have too many tears to fit into our eyes, they flow down our cheeks as we cry. Strong emotions, good or bad, cause the process to start ... a sad or happy moment in a movie or life.

Tearing is an important part of the lubrication system that helps keep eyes moist and healthy. But tears associated with emotional responses and crying, known as psychogenic tears, are much harder to understand. And there is some disagreement in the scientific community about why humans, above all other living creatures, have the need to engage in crying at all.

Some scientific evidence even indicates that the very composition of tears changes depending on whether tears result from irritation such as wind, or from crying due to an emotion such as sadness.

The simplest scientific explanations tend to link crying and tears to the earliest development of human infants, who use this form of emotional expression so that needs will be met and comfort will be offered.

In their most basic form, tears triggered by emotional responses are a very visible form of communication that aren't easily overlooked.

Some theories indicate that adult humans use crying and tears for similar though more sophisticated purposes as infants, both to communicate emotion and to ask for comfort.

Types of Tears
Pediatric Clinics of North America and other medical sources say there are four distinct types of tears, including:

Psychogenic Tears: Psychogenic tears result from emotional responses.

Induced Tears: Medications artificially produce these types of tears.

Reflex Tears: Reflex tears are produced from sources such as wind or other irritants.

Basal Tears: Basal tears are part of natural lubricating processes that help moisten the eye's surface.

Crying is an emotion that set off the natural fluid in your eyes the way that crying for joy does. Being happy is also an emotion. The short answer is because crying is an emotion which makes your eyes water(tear).

There was research on this. They had 1/2 the ppl cut onions till tears feel and 1/2 watch a sad movie. They collected all the tear samples. Those watching the movie contained toxins while the onion cutters simply cried salty water. So tears from emotion are your bodies way of ridding toxins. interesting, isnt it?!

Tears flow from our eyes when we cry because they contain chemicals and hormones produced by our bodies.

When we become upset, our brains and bodies overreact and work overtime by producing chemicals and hormones.

Crying helps eliminate these extra chemicals that we don't need.

The chemicals and hormones disappear from our body through the form of tears. As our tears flow, they sooth our sadness or distress by withdrawing these chemical agents.

That is why many people feel calmer or more refreshed after crying--because the tears get rid of these hormones that are produced when we are sad, happy, or distressed.

Tears when you're emotional contain a chemical which calms you down. Tears when you're cutting an onion or in the cold do not contain these chemicals. These tears are to clean the eyes due to possible infection in them.

Because, to not have tears when we cry would be painful and likely damaging to the eyes.

[ A likely - partially - silly answer, but none the less true. ]
