Id rather live an extra 50 years and have everyone display an air of indifference about me once im gone.

I mean people talk about heroes and stuff, but out of the 2940 marines who have died so far, how many can you name off the top of your head? how many have you bothered to look into their lives to find out how heroic they were? none? didnt think so. So why bother dying for people who talk the good talk, but when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of it, im just another stastic ......another name to put on some abstract wall somewhere.

What do you want to live forever?

But can you really guaruntee that you will live an extra 50 years? You might get hit by a mac truck driving to work tomorrow. Why not live with a little less fear and a little more courage since, at some point, you're going to die either way? As to me, write my name on a wall... in some small way I will have presense in this world so long as that wall stands, and that's more than the cowards can say for living a long time.

I could explain to you all day long what it means to have honor, but it wont do any good. If you cant understand the concept and need to ask about it, most likely no kind of explanation will work.

Its the equivalent of a religious individual debating with an atheist on the existance of God. Religion is a matter of faith, if you have it, you understand it. This is just like honor, if you have it, you can understand it, and recognize it in others.

Can I say the names of all those that have died in this conflict? No I can't. But I can say the names of my friends and comrades that have died, as can their families. We can recognize the sacrifice they made, and the honor in that sacrifice. If/when I die for my country, I dont expect everyone in the US to know me. But I know that at least those that cared about me and knew me can say I died like a man.

It's all relative, really, just like religion a matter of faith...

However people should remember, throughout most of human history , Rich or wealthy people don't fight wars, poor disenfranchised, or those low enough on the totem pole do.

Something to think about..really!

How can anyone teach you about courage and honor if you don't have any? You either have it or you don't! You may not be able to know those Marines names or stories but be sure they are all heroes. Every last one. You are to self centered. It's all about "serving" your country, not yourself, man.

I agree with promethius9594. The reasoning behind the question sorta reminds me of the better to rule in hell than serve in heaven attitude
