Should Israel strike a preemptive attack on Iran's nuclear facilities? Can it do so with jets ala Iraq '82, will it have to use ICBMs? What options are at Israel's disposal?

The answer is yes they can perform a pre-emptive strike. The question is will they do it. The answer is again yes they will if they feel threatened enough by the Iranian regime. Personally, I hope diplomacy will have some effect and Iran will act reasonably. Their current course is not in the interests of their people, but Ahmedinejad has not shown any signs of being a reasonable person and this current fiasco with Holocaust Hoax conference and his most recent statement about the destruction of Israel do not bode well for the future of this conflict. The range of weapons could be anything from conventional air strikes using F-16 fighters to the ultimate extreme of a pre-emptive nuclear strike.

in all actuality Israel only has about 25 Jets that have the proper range to attack Iran (F-15I).

Its F-16's dont have the range to fly the best path. As such if it dose attack it will take a few strikes because Irans nuke program is not as concentrated as Iraq.

This makes it very difficult for Israel to attack Iran without resulting in full scale war.

on the other hand Israel cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran.

The consequences of an attack on Iran are incalculable. The US troops in Iraq would have a lot harder time. Israel would pay a price for doing that. What is the point of more violence? Violence breeds more violence. Israel did not achieve anything by its deadly attacks on Lebanon. The same results will bear if it does so in Iran. Iran is not the same as Iraq.

Honestly, I hope it does not come to that. Ultimately, I believe that the establishment of a strong democratic government in Iraq will take all western nations a big step closer to Iran taking a more subdued role in global events. At least I hope that will be a byproduct of our efforts.

And as other answerers have stated, Iran has more facilities, many that are buried in hardened research centers. If they behave as we believe they may, it would be difficult to strike them a crippling blow. Not impossible, but difficult at best.

As far as a method, the "Bunker Buster" bombs have been extremely effective in the destruction of hardened targets and as a bonus, they are guided munition so collateral damage could be kept to a minimum. As I am certain we have people on the ground in Iran, using laser targeting would not be a problem in insuring accuracy. But as with any "Humlint" intelligence, there can and have been errors in the past.

Let us all hope it won't have to come to this drastic choice.

ABSOLUTELY!! Do it with Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. Nice and neat, no one dies. Except Iranians of course. If anyone is in doubt as to what the Iranians intend to do with their newly acquired nuclear weapons, then you truly are a complete idiot. How many times does Iran's President, Ahmadinejad, have to say, "Israel should be wiped off the map", before anyone will stand up and listen? Do you actually think this extremist will care about the consequences of a nuclear strike against Israel? He will be the biggest Martyr that ever lived. Wake up folks. Meanwhile, the U.N.'s main concern these days is Israel's possible use of "excessive force" against the terrorists attacking their civilians and firing rockets into their territory on a daily basis. The Iranian's are trying to build a bomb to take out the entire country of Israel, hundreds are dying and getting raped every day in Darfur, U.N. personnel are scrambling to shred evidence of the "oil for food scandal", starting to get the picture? But the U.N. is worried about Israel protecting it's civilians by killing Palestinian/Hamas terrorists. Who by the way are being supplied with money and arms by the Iranians. U.S. OUT OF THE U.N.!!!

Iran has short range missiles. It also has a well experienced Milotary, dedicated and well trained. Any so-called pre-mptive attack would be suicide at this time, with all the political tensions in the middle east. If Israel did attack and Irqan responded with short range missiles, which could reach targets inside israel, then you are probably starting a war of you cannot finish.

You should have put when will they preemptive strike Iran, It's sure does seem to be taking them a long time. It's fascinates me to think that both sides must be doing a secret build up of their forces while preparing for the preemptive strike.

The Islamic tradition is that infidels are given a chance to accept Islam before being attacked. This is called the da'wa.

Ahmadinejad sent a letter to the people of America, via Pres Bush, giving them this warning and fulfilling this Islamic obligation.

As the leader in the world of democracy and liberal values, American should take the lead here; Israel will give their full support.

If Israel strikes first it will most likely trigger a full scale war. This is the reason they are dragging there feet. If they do attack it will be with plains and conventional weapons.
