My personal preference (as a woman) is for it to go down, then it creates a nice visual bulge right there. And, PLEASE, where comfortable pants, tight/snug pants on a guy is NEVER appealing!
but you should put it whichever way is most comfortable, after all, you're the one connected to it.

This answer is best not viewed by children and the sensitive.
It's two different strategies.
Yours has the advantage of modesty, and may be more comfortable for you. It is also the natural position in boxer shorts. Also, high-end pants are made with more room in the right leg for gentleman like yourself. For gentlemen who take a different approach, these nicer pants may have an odd look high in the right leg.
The disadvantage is that in tighter pants or while wearing briefs the member being pressed down may force one of the testicles further back than it would naturally hang. (Forgive the immodesty, it's simply hard to speak of such things without mentioning the relevant parts.)
This can cause the problem of it being pinched between ones leg and the other leg, one's leg and the pants seem, or one's leg and a seat when sitting down quickly.
Wearing it up is only possible in briefs or tight pants, this can cause trouble by rubbing the underside against the back of a zipper when walking. This can cause chafing.
OTOH, it is more modest if the pants are looser and one is wearing briefs if a man is the type of man to become physically excited spontaneously. Having it up makes it invisible. Having it down can cause the embarassing tent experience.

I always park it down - it's more comfortable that way. It's also easier if I have to go to the bathroom - just unzip and whip it out. I don't know why you'd put it the other way - wouldn't that be uncomfortable as hell? And what if you tripped and fell and landed flat on your face - wouldn't it be very painful if the bottom of your penis hit the ground, rather than the top?
I always thought every guy pointed it down when you put your pants on - that's the way gravity makes it point when it's soft, so why put it the other way?

Interesting question, I would have to go with the wearing it down as it is more comfortable but you also left out the question of hanging to the right or to the left.
