Depends on what you are trying to compress, some files have their own compression algorithm built in and in all likelihood 3 gb of files is 3 gb compressed in any other format, from GZ, ZIP, or RAR.

Audio, GIF, and JPG are such files with pre-existing compression formats.

You can compress any folder within XP by rightclicking it on choosing Properties, then Advanced.
Click on the selection for "Compress Contents to save disk space"
Or...you can purchase a program like WinZip to compress the file for you.

It is impossible but Mr. A+ is right, in a sense. Winrar can break your 3gb files up into smaller chunks so that they'll fit into 512MB spaces. But you'll need to "unrar" those files into a 3gb space later to assemble them back together before they can be used.
