Most potatoes are good for mashing. You would get a better indication by going into supermarkets and looking at the bags it'll tell you which ones are suitable for mashing. By doing this, you wil get an indication on price/how much you want to spend too.

The yellow golden ones. Very buttery.
I had mashed PURPLE potatos the other day - OMG they were good. They cooked the purple potatos the same way you would the regular ones and make them fluffy (butter & milk). Something a little special for the holidays -- You can pipe it rather than just spooning in onto the plates.

Hi there; I use a redskin potatoes; I don't peel them and I find that you just have to wash them and place them in a pot of water with a little bit of salt. Cook them until they are the consistency to you are able to pierce a fork through them..Remember when cooking any kind of potatoes in water you want to make sure that the potatoes are all uniform in size and the water covers them..Putting a lid on top of the pot also helps in the cooking process. When I cook potatoes for mashing I add sour cream, butter, and garlic powder (not garlic salt) to my potatoes when they are all done cooking..I don't add milk because I find that the potatoes will break down faster when I kept them in a hot container..Remember to keep enough water in your pot for the potatoes, make sure they are all the same size. Also if you mix different types of potatoes together they may not all come out the same..I hope that I have helped you out..Happy Holidays

HI i am a chef and i will give you a recipe to die for.
Yukon gold mashed potatoes with caramelized onion and bacon
boil about 15 peeled yukon gold potaoes until soft (not mush)
drain entirely (the less moisture the more other items the potato will absorb and it will not turn to glue).
pan fry 1 onion julienned add water drops during this so they dont burn but they get caramelized(thin sliced)
pan fry 1lb of bacon chopped to bits(you can use bacon bits but that would be cheating)
mash the potatoes and add butter to your hearts desire
add cooked bacon and caramelized onions
add heavy cream until the texture you desire to acheive
salt and pepper to taste
enjoy the best mash you ever had

pretty much avery potato is good mached. Its really a matter of what kind of taste you are going for.
if you are looking for a change, try mashed sweet potatoes. Pretty orange colrr and sweet creamy texture is a nice cange from traditional mashed which usually uses russet potatoes.

We use the russet potatoes, but instead of boiling them try popping them in the microwave or oven to cook them, then scooping the center out like you would an avocado. When you boil potatoes it tends to boil the starchy flavor out of it and it doesn't have much of the potato flavor. Try both ways, boiled & mashed AND baked/micor'd & mashed and you will see the difference! If you boil red potatoes, add butter and chives... KILLER!

I like to use Small Red Potatoes. You can use them with or without the skin. If you want more potatoes for the bag, I would get the big brown ones though.

hello, i am a produce manager for wholefoods. if i were you i would pick russet potatoes for mashing. there are 3 kinds of potatoes, yukon, red and russet idaho's. russets boil easier and mash easier. yukon are good for making french fries and the red potatoes are excellent for roasting. so you might want to take the russets. also when you mash them with butter, pepper and milk, they taste great..............good luck
