The pet odor has probably gotten into some fabrics or other soft furnishings. If you have carpet, it may be in that as well.
At a feed store or pet store or on line buy a product called Natures Miracle Odor eliminator and follow the instructions on it. This will be great for carpet, flooring, places you know are stained. You can also spray it on upholstery (test a spot first) and I have used it in "pee spot" corners.
Wash all your curtains and drapes if you haven't already, and let everything air out really well.
The natures miracle is an enzyme that eats up the cause of the odor. Note that especially on carpets or other areas it has to penetrate, you may need to treat more than once.
I don't think pet odor in the air contains particles that make you sick, but the cause of the odor still being in soft furnishings, etc, would likely have bacteria in it.
Um, as a property manager I have seen extreme cases where so many pets had been fouling a dwelling for so long the dwelling had to be completely gutted, all carpet, sub floor, sheetrock, etc,, and have the whole interior structure replaced! Hopefully this is not your problem!!!
Best of luck!

There are many different products at petstores that reduce pet odor. I've never really had a problem with pet odor so I have never had to try any of these. I would go out and ask fellow pet owners or the store workers to see what they recommend.

Be careful what chemicals you spray to get rid of pet smells.. they might cover up the smell short term, but they may "lock in" the smell long term. The best thing to do is to rent one of those vacuums that shoots water into the carpet and then sucks it back up. You can usually rent those at grocery stores or do-it-yourself stores.
Also, pet odor may be trapped in your carpet pads. If the water vacuum doesn't help, you may need to replace the carpet pads.

Febreeze works really good and even though i cleaned my litter box every other day the house still smelled bad. I went out and bought a litter maid and its amazing how much better the house smells.

air out the house and clean you vents. use vinegar water to clean everything. there are other things you can use on the spots in your furniture, carpeting , and fabrics the animal has 'gone' on. air fresheners help after that. good luck

I use incense sticks. They come in all different scents and they are kind to pets and the environment.
