If tattooists went under anaesthesia they wouldn't be able to feel what they were doing.....

except possibly to help with spelling.

Because a part of the ritual is the pain. It's usually not so bad as many people make it out to be. I find it rather pleasant, personally.

If you did it under anesthesia, it would be just odd. It would be like ordering a souvenir Eiffel Tower toy from a gift shop in Paris when you've never been, and then showing it off as something impressive.

The answer is simple: Besides the exorbitant costs of hiring a qualified anaesthesiologist, a person has more control over their bodily movements when they can feel the area. Otherwise, uncontrollable movements and spasms could create some really ugly tattoos. And if instead of a local anaesthetic a person were to have a general anaesthetic, this would require some serious medical equipment.

Lastly, who wants to get a permanent, lifelong tattoo, and yet be unable to recall having actually gotten it?

That is because the pain of body modification, and the resulting endorphine high, is part of the whole attraction.

Endorphines are produced by the body in very small amounts in response to pain and produce a numbing, slightly high effect. They are weight for weight much more powerful than morphine. It is this high that body modifiers (and long-distance runners) get addicted to.

It doesn't hurt bad enough to need to be drugged.
Scarification and branding look cool, but there's just too much chance for infection. Once you relax its better. Being tense and nervous make it hurt more.

A lot of them are self medicated and take painkillers, drink alcohol, or smoke prior to the procedure. Most pros though won't do the procedure if you're too out of it though. The risk of you complaining afterwards or regretting the procedure are too great.
Some of the people doing it though are borderline masochists and get off on the pain. And some take their friends and want to appear macho by ignoring the pain.

The risks of anesthesia are much greater than the pain of a tattoo, plus they'd have to hire specialist to do this which would make the cost of getting tattoo be comparable to that of minor surgery.

i am extensively tattooed arms ,calves, chest ,back, ribs ,hands and have to it does hurt but it not a severe hurt just more of a nuisance.i also have three brandings on my stomach,my chest, and my forearm you think it would hurt when you see it but actually you are burning off the nerve ending instantaneously so no pain but one hell of an adrenalin rush and the fear when you see the glowing steel and that's the worst part "anticipation"

Because the pain is tolerable, tattoo parlors with have to employ anesthesiologists, and the process would be more expensive than it already is

Anaethesia is not a risk-free procedure.

The tattooist needs to be a qualified anaesthetist and would charge mega bucks for their services.
