The drinking age for along time had been 21, it was changed during the Vietnam War. Later thanks to pressure by lobbyist groups such as MADD, to withhold federal funding for highways, most states changed the age to 21. Unlike the previous post to this question I believe the drinking age should be lowered back to 18. If the government feels you are mature enough to be drafted into the military and sent to die for your country, to stand trial as an adult, and get married vote, then you should be mature enough to enjoy a drink.

There are some 18 year olds still in High School, that could be a huge problem all by itself. Also you need more than 2 years with your drivers license before you can make a good judgement call about Drinking and Driving ( or more specifically not!) This also gets many people beyond college and into a much more educated decision making process. Being able to vote and join the armed forces at 18 allows for those not going to college to have choices about how to begin their lives and perhaps earn college money and/or credit.

because at 18 you are still stupid. most 18 year olds cant drive well sober, much less intoxicated. and president bush (sr) had nothing to do with passing any law to change the legal drinking age. the national minimum drinking age was passed in 1984 under president regan. it was legislatively pushed by madd. i wish people would educated themselves before spouting off a uninformed retort.

Some country's you can start drinking very early...as early as you can pick up a glass of wine. They figure if you start really early by the time you have to make big decisions you should be done with your stupidity.

18 is still fairly early.

I don't know. When I was little, it was 18, then they changed it. It seems like if a man (or woman) is old enough to go fight for his country, he ought to be able to have a beer too. In some countrys, there's no drinking age and there tends to be less abuse of alcohol in those places. It's like we all want what we can't have.

we can thank the president's daddy for that one... when bush sr. was in office in the early 90's he passed the act to change it from 18 to 21; why??? well, the bush's seem to downplay the important issues in our country when they should be using their time on more important matters... i can't elaborate further w/o getting off topic, but yeah it's stupid
