I'm not sure what the tipping etiquette is for drive-in restaurants since I don't go there, but at other restaurants if you are not placing your order at the counter, then tipping is appropriate. 15% for good service, more for excellent service. If you feel that you shouldn't leave a tip because service was that bad, you should speak to a manager and explain what went wrong so that server can improve.
Yes, you should feel guilty. If you don't feel bad, you either don't understand our society & culture (you do now, you just read this) or you're greedy and heartless.

I have been a server for more than four years. The restaurant only pays their wait staff $2.13 an hour. Plus I then have to give the restaurant 3% of my sales whether I make the money or not. So with that being said, if you can and ate at my table and your bill was $100, and you didn't leave any tip I would have had to pay $3.00 of my money to wait on your table. How does that make you feel?

I was a waitress years ago ,I made 2.10 an hour plus tips,I had to claim a percentage of all food sales for taxes whether I got the tips at all ,the tips or not, government rule so you don't cheat uncle Sam ,When I got my paycheck it was somewhere between 3 and 6 dollars after taxes ,most people who wait tables do it for lack of a better job,it's something you do when you hit rock bottom and the kids need food. It's no fun kissing peoples butts and serving them like there better than you and when you don't tip ,you used them ,took advantage of them and you should feel bad ,I knew waitress that buy their families food and gas on a daily basis out of there tips, can barely collect there rent ,but at least there trying and not sitting home getting welfare,You should tip ,do you want them all to decide welfare pays better and there wasting there time working?

In a sit down restaurant you should tip. Wait staff are only paid around $3.00/hr on the contingency that they also make tips. You should tip in those places for good or at least satisfactory service.
However, the point of the tip system is to improve service. So, if you get bad service, you don't tip.
Though, I feel the system is stupid. Just charge me more for my food, people!

YES!!! Waitresses make on average $3 -$4 an hour and the rest of their income is from tips. If you don't tip them, they pretty much didn't get paid for working/serving you. You may not understand unless you are a server yourself once. I waited tables in college and now I'm a good tipper because I know how bad it sucks if someone leaves you nothing. Try it sometime.

Oh yeah. Def feel guilty. Many restaurant employees work off tips alone. ( Would'nt you want a tip for a job well done). And its also a common courtesy to tip. It does'nt have to be a large tip, but its a Thank You for there "good" customer service. Of course if someone is rude etc, them maybe NOT. Otherwise its a bit tacky NOT to tip.
Consider changing that!

It is not the customer's fault if the waiter/waitresses aren't paid enough. If you felt the service was extremely good and you don't have to be tight on money; give a tip. However, if the service wasn't that good or if you can't afford to give a tip; don't.
The tipping culture is creeping its way over to the UK and it's annoying me. Plenty of people get paid minimum wage or under; and they don't work in the food service industry; so therefore don't get tips.

If the tip is earned the server should get one. I tip well unless my drink glass goes dry or the waitress is either too attentive or not attentive enough (once a waitress was so friendly she sat down at the table with my husband and I). She didn't get a tip. We were there to eat together not with a perfect stranger. These people get paid very little sometimes and if they work hard to earn a tip they should get one.

Yes. Waiters and waitresses don't even make minimum wage--because they are "tipped" employees they can make as little as $3 an hour "salary" because they are supposed to earn most of their wages from tips. If you're a frequent patron at a restaurant and you have a reputation for not tipping, no one is going to want to wait on you plus do you really want to p!ss off people who will be handling your food? For fast food restaurants you usually don't tip, but other places--and at places like beauty salons--you tip.

Yes the waitstaff depends on those tips. Some restaurants base what the waiter has to tip to the bar and bus staff based on what the tip should be based on the bill. When you don't tip the waiter may have to pay off money they didn't get.
The restaurant industry should be forced to pay their waitstaff at least minimum wage.
