It depends what type of conjunctivitis you may have. Some are viral, bacterial, and others caused by dust. An opthamologist would be able to identify it for you. Until you know which type, number one.. keep your hands away from your eyes. As unbearable as that may sound, your hands become the medium of transfer for that. If you do itch, WASH YOUR HANDS. Avoid tissue. It has little dust particles that only aggravate the situation. Cool water on the eyes helps control the itch. You can use a wet paper towel to clean the eyes. Never use the same side of the towel on both eyes and don't reuse it. Most pinkeye, regardless of type doesn't last more than 24 hours. Since you don't know the type, doing the above will prevent it from spreading or contaminating anyone else if you HAVE to be around people.
I speak from experience. I have very sensitive eyes and have seen more than my share of conjunctivitis.

You need to use a warm compress several times a day. In the meantime find a walk in clinic or urgent care and get this treated as left untreated it can cause corneal scarring or other eye problems. There has to be some walk in clinics around if you are in a college town. Don't you have a clinic associated with the college or something called and infirmary or dispensary?

Try a warm clean wash cloth on your eye for about 10-15 mins. several times a day to help bring up the head.
When its really big, I hate to say this, but you can use a gold ring, cleaned with soap and rinsed well, use the ring's edge and rub it across the head to pop it. Always wash your hands before and after touching the area as this is contagious.
Good luck.

There are no over the counter remedies for pink eye in the United States. There may be some home remedies, but like you said, it's your eye, and it is probably not a good idea to just try anything.

There is not much you can do. Even antibiotics might not help since it could be caused by a virus. It will go away in a week with or without treatment.
