The Truth your answer can be found in the Four Noble Truths and The Noble Eightfold Path. Just type in this information in search on your computer and it will bring up many Most Excellent sites to investigate.
Why are we alive and what really is life - are not questions that can be answered by any so called "holy" book written by controlling, fear based religions.
Do the search, and listen and learn. Be opened minded. And then you will find the answers within yourself.

>> why are we alive?

No particular reason. Why do you ask? If there was an actual reason, would you do anything differently?

>> What really is life?

Basically that which can reproduce. Us, animals, plants - we're all alive. Rocks, on the other hand, are not alive. See? Very easy to tell the difference.

I'm sure we are alive... but we have no freedom because we are plugged in to the matrix, and our physical body is acting like a battery powering a super computer for some aliens. These aliens put in some programs to simulate 'God' or some higher being to keep the matrix in order.

If you are really looking for answers i think you asked the wrong bunch because they are just going to tell you what they have been told in their various religions (cant blame us) however the truth is the answer is within you, its something you cant be told however you can discover it. We are alive because we have won the race of natural selection (scientifically) or it was destiny (religiously) both ways we were ment to live in harmony with our soroundings. Life is to be able to ask that question and to function independently.

You're asking two questions when you ask, "Why are we alive?"

Things have potentially two meanings, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic is why it has been made to exist, intrinsic is why it does exist.

For example, I fill a water balloon. It's extrinsic meaning, the reason I filled it up, is because I hope to tag my mother with it during a friendly game of water balloons. But the reason for the balloon itself is to hold water -- that is its intrinsic meaning.

Humans have no extrinsic purpose, because we are not created. However, we are self aware and thus capable of choosing to give ourselves intrinsic meaning. For me, that's the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. You can make it something else.

As for what life is, life is metabolism, nothing more, nothing less.

Life is a test between evil and good. God (Allah) has given a choice between 2 roads and on the Day of Judgment we will be judged based upon the road we choose. We could either be rewarded with heaven or go to hell.
This life has a purpose and the purpose is to obey and please Allah.
Hope that helps!

We are all Gods children, we are the miracle of birth! Life is what God created. What you do with your life is up to you!

Your 'why 'questions would drive me nuts.
Your 'What' question really moves me to see the miracle .
I feel I want to find out and live to the full in the meantime.
