I always seem to get side tracked resulting in my coffee getting cold, and often i just stick it in the microwave for a minute to get it hot again. The other day my mother said that she read somewhere that it is bad to do this... i can't see the explanation behind this one,but i was just wondering if anyone has heard/read anything similar...?

its not bad health-wise, but its bad for the flavor of the coffee. Don't you notice that it gets a kind of burnt taste to it when you do this? I had the same problem, and found a better solution. Get a nice thermal karafe. When the pot is done brewing, pour it into the karafe, and it will stay hot all day long with no need to reheat and no burner to worry about or anything. It retains its fresh brewed taste all day. Krups makes a good one...you can get them at target, walmart, crate&barrel, anywhere they sell kitchen stuff.

Microwaves use radiation to heat the consumer's products...The radiation waves cause deterioration in the minerals in the water and the nutrition content in many of our foods. I prefer not to use a microwave, but I suppose coffee wouldn't be as bad as, say, an egg or some vegetables.

I don't think it's bad because in recent reports, they have said microwaves are not as bad for radiation as they thought they were back in the 80's. I just wouldn't re-heat coffee in the microwave because I can't imagine it would taste too nice.

No, it's as bad as putting your food in.
The only thing you should do is put it for a minute then stir it a little bit and then put it again because the microwave tends to heat only the top of the coffee or only the mug!

if you are a coffee branch of foodie, it would be terrible. If you are one of the many coffee drinkers, as long as it's hot and in a cup, it's good ... warmed over or microwaved.

If you can tell the difference, you probably won't do it. If you can't tell the difference, keep on doing it. Just don't let a coffee fanatic friend know!

I have heard something about this. There was an e-mail going around telling people not to heat water or other liquids in the microwave, because it does something to the molecules, causing the liquid to explode in your face. I tend not to believe it. I have heated water, coffee, milk, etc. in the microwave for years, with no problems.

I too am puzzled. I can't think of anything your mom is referring too unless she's someone who doesn't know how it works. some people mistakenly believe a microwave gives off radiation which of course it does not. It heats using moisture and sound waves that excite the water molecules.

i don't think that there is anything inherently "bad" about re-heating coffee - as in bad for your health. however, re-heating coffee can burn the already "cooked" product - like leaving the coffee pot on its heating element does. i recommend that you invest in a thermal coffee cup, and maybe even in a thermal coffee decanter. that way your coffee will stay hot a little longer, and you won't need to re-heat.
