TV, like so many other things, is a potentially awesome tool for learning.
It can also be a tool to manipulate the masses. Or to try and make money.
Ultimately, the viewer (or the parents of the viewer) has control of the input they receive. And that input can allow us to delve into issues that we'd otherwise never be exposed to. It can also allow us to see other people's viewpoints.
Not to mention, TV can be very entertaining. :)
Here's an interesting site I came across while doing a search on yahoo:

Good luck.

Television opened up a world of experience to a generation of people who would never have the chance to experience these things personally. How many of us would have seen a shuttle launch, a political convention or speech, great moments in history, landmark performances, in person? Just as the radio opened up the ability to hear the people who shaped their world in our great grandparents generation, TV opened up the ability to hear and see those people tp us. Computers have extended that to see, hear and interact.
