Prednisone is a steroid. It's very efficient, but has several unwelcome side effects, swelling, weight gain, night sweats, nightmares, constant hunger. It is prescribed for many reasons, but usually for long term chronic pain. Hydrocortisone is much, much milder, with little to no side effects and is also prescribed for pain such as arthritis, or degeneration.
