I believe the egyptians would bring large palms to worship Rah the Sun god during the shortest days of the year. The tree was later associated with christmas to coincide pagan holidays with christian ones.

pagans, and ornaments were formerly heads hung from said fir tree. christmas has origins in winter festivals which correlate in time of year and custom with pagan rituals
