Is she? When she was captured and rescued, the military put out a totally bogus story of her fighting like a Rambette, but she, to her credit, admitted that it wasn't true. Neither was she abused by the Iraqis who cared for her in the hospital. Niether did the Army have to fight to get her back. Amazing how the Pentagon can lie like a cheap rug.

Jessica Lynch was wounded during an engagement with Iraqi forces. Albeit it was not a gun shot wound it was nevertheless, a wound that resulted from battle. Therefore her status a a combat veteran and earning of the Purple Heart is legitimate.
It was the press that picked up the ball and ran with it not the Army!
So I have no problem as an Infantry veteran of Desert Storm in giving her a medal and a pat on the back for a job well done!

You can thank the media for attempting to make her into a hero by painting a picture of this lone soldier fighting her way out of a situation that was false. Private Lynch was a survivor who was rescued by an Iraqi attorney who assisted her and got her to medical help.

She wasn’t a hero in the sense that I would use the term, nor in a sense that the popular consciousness would recognize as heroism. Heroism requires voluntary sacrifice when one has the option not to sacrifice. She just happened to be foisted into circumstances that were beyond her control, and the media elevated her to an icon of American bravado and resilience. I feel for her for having to go through such a harrowing experience, but I would hardly put her in the same boat with many men and women who willfully choose to enter into precarious situations when they don’t have to. When the option is take to either undergo sacrifice or not, and one chooses the former willingly, that to me embodies heroism.

That woman is NOT a hero!
I will tell you WHO IS THE HERO.
My friend who perched on top of a hummer with the .50 cal machine gun and prayed for his life every minute IS A HERO.
My dedicated friend who gave up everything for God & Country so he could serve the Stars & Stripes IS A HERO.
My friend who WISHED for a hot shower once a month IS A HERO.
My friend who only WISHED he could get married IS A HERO.
My friend who gave up his fingers and legs for the Stars & Stripes IS A HERO.
That woman who RAN from the enemy and was caught in her escape is NOT A HERO.
That woman who was rescued by soldiers who dreaded an encounter with the enemy when she RESTED on a hospital bed is NOT A HERO.
That woman who got a chopper ride back to her little town while my lonely friend laid still in a German hospital hoping for a ride home is NOT A HERO.
I HOPE and HOPE this answers your question.

She's not a true hero. The press and the Pentagon made her out to be one for the "good of the country". You know, let's make this war out to be glorified and acceptable to the American public. Hero? I think not. She run and hid, and not only did she not even fire her weapon, she lost it while running away. There were tens of thousands of P.O.W.'s over the years. A lot were tortured and murdered while in captivity. Yet this little nobody gets all this press and attention. It's makes me sick to my stomach. To answer your question, she is as far from a "real hero" as you can get.

Heros are people who will do self sacrafice to save life. Did she try to save others or did she try to save her self? A coward runs and leaves his/her comrades there to fight. I don't know Ms.Lynch's story to make a just comment.
As for heros, It is more honorable to be known as a hero by actual combat veterans then then to be raised to a hero from politics.
As for politics here is some advice from me to you.
For a commander gain the repect of his men he must first go through the worst of what he puts his men through.

Oh you have struck a nerve with me!?!??!!?!??!!??!!!!
Let me start off by saying this....I am a disabled veteran of the USAF for 18 years, my husband is a combat wounded retired marine....
That girl is no more a hero than my big toe! While I give her credit for enduring a tough time, she is NOT a hero. She did not do anything extraordinary to save anyone else, or do anything great for our country.
She was a token....the cute little southern white girl...."I'm an American Soldier", My @$$...they gave that girl a book deal, a movie deal, a house for her & her boyfriend, who have since broken up, and now she is pregnant by some other boyfriend...Give me a break....
She was in the Army, on a mission that went bad...
Talk to the real hero's...Oh, nevermind, you can't....they are no longer with us....Go talk to their parents, children or spouses, perhaps they can tell you a thing or two about being a hero.
To answer your question, no she is not regarded by anyone I know as a real hero!!!!!!!!!

She is a hero because she stepped forward when called to serve.
She is a hero because she paid a price for her service.
BTW - for all of you who are repeating BS in an apparent attempt to discredit somebody who has done more for her nation than you ever will:
1) She was not 'running away.' She wil in her First Sergeants Humvee while he drove around inside the enemy kill zone rallying his troops. Staying in an unarmored vehicle driving back and forth in an kill zone counts as 'courage' in my book.
2) The military did not make up and false stories about her. The news media picked up a rumor and published it despite being warned by the military that the story could not be confirmed.

Beats the hell out of me. They all took a wrong turn, got lost, got captured, had to be rescued, and she's the only one who's name I know out of the whole group because of the the media circus.
